Timothee Chalamet‘s Unexpected Path to Hollywood Success
Looking back on his early career, Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet remembers a particularly difficult time during which action films, it seemed, were simply off-limits. He simply didn’t match the physical mold sought after by casting directors.
“I would always get the same feedback, ‘Oh, you don’t have the right body,’” Chalamet recalled in a recent interview with Rolling Stone UK.
At one point, Chalamet’s agent informed him they were going to stop submitting him for bigger projects because he wasn’t putting on weight despite trying. "I was trying to put on weight. I couldn’t! I basically couldn’t. My metabolism or whatever the f**k couldn’t do it," he recounted.
As a result, Chalamet turned his attention to independent films. It proved to be a career-defining decision.
Movies like Lady Bird, Beautiful Boy, Little Women, and Call Me By Your Name became his claim to fame, ultimately earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
"I was knocking on one door that wouldn’t open,” Chalamet said, reflecting on his experience. "So I went to what I thought was a more humble door, but actually ended up being explosive for me.”
After starring in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune franchise, Chalamet has become a solidified presence in Hollywood.
His upcoming role as iconic musician Bob Dylan in the film A Complete Unknown, which premieres in theaters on December 25, is sure to be yet another stunning performance.
“There’s an intimacy to that work that I hear in Bob’s early music, in his early folk songs,” Chalamet noted, drawing a comparison to his earlier, more delicate roles. “Eventually you want to use different instruments.”
