H3 Network Secures Funding to Improve Women’s Health Care Nationwide

A groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing women’s health care in the Netherlands has received a significant boost. The Head Heart Hormones (H3) network has been awarded a grant for its ambitious project, “Implementation of knowledge about Head, Heart and Hormones for interdisciplinary women-specific care.” This funding will enable the H3 network to establish multidisciplinary meetings in every province, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing to create localized H3 networks.

Shorter Wait Times, Better Care

This project directly addresses a long-standing issue: the lengthy wait times women face when seeking care for complex health concerns. By facilitating communication and coordination between general practitioners and various medical specialists, the H3 network aims to streamline the process.

“With the H3 network, we focus on women-specific care, in contrast to almost all scientific medical research that has been conducted exclusively on men. It’s time we bridge the gap,” said the doctors of the H3 network: Dorenda van Dijken, Sandra Kooij and Janneke Wittekoek.

The H3 network’s interdisciplinary approach allows women to receive specialized help more quickly. Instead of navigating multiple appointments with individual specialists, patients can benefit from a collaborative, holistic approach that considers the interplay between head, heart, and hormones.

A New Era of Women’s Health

This development represents a monumental leap forward for women’s health in the Netherlands. Women facing complex concerns—ranging from psychological to hormonal and heart-related issues—often encounter obstacles within the existing healthcare system. The H3 network offers an innovative platform that prioritizes knowledge sharing and collaboration, ensuring women receive comprehensive and effective care.

“With regional cooperation and knowledge about the head, heart, and hormones in women with psychological complaints, patients are treated earlier and better. Instead of referral, peer consultation may be sufficient to start or continue treatment in a more targeted manner,” psychiatrist Sandra Kooij

emphasizes.

Bridging the Gap in Healthcare

Women outlive men, but shockingly, they spend more years in poor health.
This isn’t just a coincidence: healthcare has historically relied heavily on research conducted exclusively on men. Symptoms of heart attacks in women are often less recognized, and countless medications haven’t been adequately tested on women. As a result, women tend to use more medications and report side effects more frequently.

There are still significant knowledge gaps when it comes to menstrual health, hormonal disorders, and women’s mental health. Conditions like autism and ADHD are often overlooked in women. While there’s growing awareness of disparities in mental health prevalence, the underlying causes and their impact on prevention, risks, diagnosis, and treatments remain largely unexplored.

The H3 network recognizes these urgent needs, seeking to empower women and healthcare providers through knowledge sharing. This network will be instrumental in improving the lives of women throughout the Netherlands by addressing the specific health challenges they often face.

Transforming Consciousness

One area where the H3 network’s impact will be acutely felt is for women living with ADHD. These women often experience heightened hormonal mood swings and depression, combined with increased heart problems, especially during the menopause transition. Their health often necessitates treatment by multiple specialists, each addressing only a part of the complex picture, which leads to longer wait times and fragmented care. The H3 network aims to change this paradigm.

Creating Lasting Change

The H3 network was founded by a dedicated group of physicians committed to transforming women’s health care. Their collaborative approach seeks to establish lasting structural changes within the healthcare landscape. By fostering connections and encouraging knowledge exchange, the H3 network aims to create a system that truly serves the unique needs of women.
