Pro Tennis Tournaments Coming to Pacific

The University of the Pacific’s men’s tennis program will be one of just 14 institutions nationwide hosting Universal Tennis Rating Pro Tennis Tour tournaments in 2025. The tigers are poised to welcome multiple professional tennis tournaments to campus beginning February 10th, running continuously throughout the 2025 calendar year.

Elite Competition Comes to Campus

The Pro Tennis Tour is a global professional tennis circuit, streamed live through Amazon Prime, offering elite-level competition to players from around the globe. These tournaments provide a high-level, guaranteed match play format, complete with prize money, attracting top talent seeking to refine their skills and climb the tennis ladder.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be selected as one of the host sites for the Universal Tennis Rating Pro Tennis Tour,” said Robin Goodman, head coach of the men’s tennis program and 2024 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year. “This provides a fantastic opportunity not only to attract top talent to our campus but also allows our current team to compete against elite professionals right here at home. The impact on our campus and the community will be immeasurable.”

The Pacific Tigers are joined by fellow West Coast Conference member Pepperdine as the only two schools from the conference selected. These two will be joined by 12 other institutions from across the country: Arizona, Baylor, California, Florida State, Illinois, LSU, Miami, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC, and Wake Forest.

Expanding the Impact of Collegiate Tennis

“Universal Tennis Rating Sports is incredibly excited to work alongside these esteemed programs and bring professional tennis to more college campuses,” said Chase Hodges, vice president and general manager of Universal Tennis Rating Sports. “Universal Tennis Rating Sports helps programs of all sizes generate millions annually through innovative initiatives like camps, circuits, and on-campus tournaments. These partnerships proved mutually beneficial for the programs, coaches, and the athletes involved.”

Elevating Player Development

Results from these tournaments will count towards UTR ratings – a comprehensive system that uniquely rates players of all ages, genders, and geographical locations. A player’s UTR rating is calculated based on whom they play against, rather than solely on the number of tournaments they attend or points accumulated. This ranking system provides an unparalleled view of a player’s true tennis ability, crucial for recruiting and player development.

“For me, having the opportunity to play in the Pro Tennis Tour on our home courts is remarkable,” said Tiago Silva, a member of the Pacific Tigers’ men’s tennis team. “It’s an incredible opportunity to play against high-caliber players in a professional setting without the substantial travel and financial burdens. This experience will undoubtedly contribute to my development as a player and prepare me for my professional career after graduation.”

The UTR rating system has become the preferred measurement tool in college tennis, employed extensively for recruiting by almost all college coaches in the United States. With the addition of Universal Tennis Rating tournaments on college campuses, the system will become even more valuable, providing opportunities for more matches to contribute to player ratings.

2025 Season Starts Soon

Pacific will kick off its 2025 schedule on January 22nd with a neutral court match against Prairie View A&M University in Waco, Texas. The following week, the Tigers host UC San Diego in their first home match on February 1st at 11:00 am at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
