Adolescents, Victims, and Perpetrators of Armed Attacks inNaples

NAPLES.- The city of Naples in Italia is on alert after the death of another young man due to a gunshot.

Last Saturday, an 18-year-old young man lost his life after being hit by a bullet from a gun he was playing with in the streets of the Naples Historic Center.

A day later, the victim’s cousin was arrested after confessing that he accidentally fired the gun they were playing with.

This case joins other similar ones in the same Italian city in recent weeks.

There are three deaths from firearms in Naples

From last October 27 to Saturday, November 9, there were five gun attacks in which young people, some teenagers, were involved.

The cases range from accidental incidents to intentional attacks.

On October 27, a 20-year-old young man was shot in the back of the head while driving his vehicle; the victim survived.

A case that ended in tragedy occurred last November 2 in the San Sebastiano del Vesuvius neighborhood in Naples when a 17-year-old teenager murdered another, two years older than him.

The attacker was released from prison last May and shot the 19-year-old after a fight between two groups, allegedly because he dirty his shoes from an accidental stomp.

A week earlier, two teenagers, ages 14 and 17, shot and killed another 15-year-old boy in the city center.

Apology for crime comes to TikTok

These cases have raised alarms about violence in the streets, marginalization and the activity of criminal groups such as the Camorrawhich contribute to the ease with which adolescents are obtaining firearms.

Francesco Borrelli, deputy of Green-Left Alliance coalition who has been protected by escort since 2022, reported that more and more young people identify with crime, and even make altars or other tributes to criminals who have died.

The legislator recalled the case of Luigi Caiafaa 17-year-old minor from the historic center of Naples who died at the hands of the police while committing an attempted robbery in 2020.

After his death, a mural and an altar appeared in his honor.

“Beyond the mural, there was a small altar of devotion, as if it were the Virgin Mary, with the boy’s photo and his things, like a clock,” says Borrelli.

Although the police covered the mural with the young man’s face, there is a graffiti in his memory: “Luigi Cafaia lives”said the Italian.

The deputy regretted that these expressions of admiration for members of crime even reach social networks such as TikTok.

Los altars of the Camorra “Almost all of them were dejected years ago, but the apology moved to social networks, especially TikTok,” Borrelli explained.

What role does socioeconomic factors play in the⁢ rising gun⁢ violence in Naples according to Dr. Rossi?

## Interview with ⁢Criminologist Dr. Maria Rossi on Rising Gun⁤ Violence in Naples

**Host:** Welcome‍ Dr. Rossi, thank you for‌ joining us today.

**Dr. Rossi:** My pleasure to be here.

**Host:** We’ve been covering⁤ the tragic string of shootings in Naples, especially involving young⁢ people. What are your initial thoughts on this alarming trend?

**Dr. Rossi:** This ⁣rash of violence is deeply troubling. While Naples has unfortunately seen higher crime rates⁤ in the past, the ⁢involvement of teenagers and the seemingly callous nature⁢ of some of these attacks is particularly concerning.⁣ These are not your typical gang related incidents, we’re ⁣seeing increasing⁣ instances of teens using ⁢firearms in reckless, even playful ways, with deadly consequences.

**Host:** You mentioned‌ “playful ways”. The most ⁢recent case involved an 18-year-old who was accidentally shot ⁤by his cousin while they were playing with a gun.

**Dr. Rossi:** ⁤Exactly. This‌ lack ‌of understanding of the inherent danger of firearms is deeply worrisome. Guns are not toys. This⁣ incident, and others like it, highlight the urgent need for stricter gun control measures and comprehensive education programs about gun safety,‌ particularly targeting young people.

**Host:** Beyond ‌stricter laws and education, what other societal⁢ factors might be contributing to this⁢ problem?

**Dr. Rossi:** Neapolitan society, like many others, is grappling with economic hardship, social inequality, and‍ limited opportunities for young people.

These factors often breed frustration and can create a breeding ground for violence. We ⁤need to address the root causes of this problem, providing accessible education,⁣ employment training, and creating conduits for constructive outlets ⁣for young ‌people to release their anger and‍ frustration.

**Host:**

What message would you like to send to the people of Naples, especially to the young people?

**Dr. Rossi:** I⁣ urge everyone, ‍especially young people, to ‌remember that violence is never the answer. Seek peaceful solutions to conflicts, and understand⁤ that resorting to guns has devastating, life-altering consequences. There are resources available to⁢ help, so please reach out for‌ support if you are struggling with anger,⁤ violence,⁢ or thoughts of harming yourself or others.

**Host:**

Thank you, Dr. Rossi, for your insightful comments.
