Hamburg Exhibition Hall Transformed into Temporary Accommodation for Families
A bustling Hamburg exhibition hall is undergoing a remarkable transformation, trading its usual display of products and innovations for a haven of support and temporary shelter. Beginning in December, the hall will welcome up to 300 individuals and families, offering a crucial lifeline during a period of high demand for accommodation services.
Addressing the Urgent Need for Housing
The decision to repurpose the exhibition hall stems from the urgent need to alleviate the strain on Hamburg’s public accommodation system. As of October 31st, almost 47,000 individuals were seeking shelter under public law, pushing the system to nearly 97 percent capacity.
This innovative solution provides valuable breathing room while offering a comfortable and supportive environment for those in need. “The temporary use of an exhibition hall relieves the burden on the public accommodation system over the turn of the year,” officials have stated.
A Comfortable and Welcoming Environment
Far from a sterile or impersonal setting, organizers are committed to creating a welcoming and home-like atmosphere within the hall. Beds, tables, chairs, and lockers will be provided, with designated areas for individual privacy. Sanitary facilities will be easily accessible, ensuring comfort and dignity. Recognizing the importance of community and connection, a dedicated play area will be set up for children, complete with planned volunteer activities, especially during the festive season.
Modern amenities will further enhance the living experience, with washing machines and WiFi access available to all residents. “A high proportion of families is expected,” organizers shared, emphasizing their dedication to meeting the unique needs of children and their caregivers.
