BSP: We Need a Suitable Speaker, Not Just the Tallest or Oldest
The candidate for speaker of Bulgaria’s National Assembly must be chosen based on their capabilities, not physical attributes or political maneuvering. This was the assertion made by Atanas Zafirov, temporary chairman of the BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party) in an interview on BNT.
Zafirov, speaking during yesterday’s live broadcast, stressed that the position requires someone who is qualified to lead with competence and experience. "We need to elect a suitable person to lead this National Assembly. Silvi Kirilov had difficulty reading a sheet of paper today…", Zafirov noted pointedly, referring to the ITN’s nominated candidate.
He reiterated that Silvi Kirilov was not a suitable choice for either Speaker or Acting Prime Minister role. The BSP, he emphasized, is committed to putting forward qualified candidates who are capable of effectively serving the people.
Zafirov further announced that the BSP-United Left will be changing their candidate for the speakership, indicating Petar Kanev as one potential replacement.
Responding to goings-on in parliament, Zafirov criticized the PP-DB proposal of a political “sanitary cordon” around Delyan Peevski, stating that such a move was undemocratic.
He asserted that isolating MPs prevents them from participating in government activities and emphasisied that the socialist party was open to assuming a governance role if there was a desire for a left-leaning agenda.

Zafirov also confirmed his candidacy to lead the BSP, expressing concerns about potential threats to the party and the future of the Bulgarian left.
The selection of a new speaker will be crucial, as Bulgaria continues to be gripped by political impasse.
What criteria does the BSP believe are essential for a suitable Speaker candidate?
## BSP: Looking Beyond Superficial Qualities for a Suitable Speaker
**Host:** Joining us today is [Guest Name], representative from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), to discuss the ongoing stalemate in the Bulgarian Parliament. We’re now over a month since the elections, and the Parliament still hasn’t been able to elect a Speaker. What’s your party’s stance on the current situation?
**Guest:** Our position is clear. We need a Speaker who is truly qualified for the role, not just someone chosen based on arbitrary factors like height or age. We believe the selection process has become overly focused on superficial qualities instead of prioritizing experience, competence, and a genuine commitment to serving the Bulgarian people. This deadlock is a symptom of a deeper issue: the lack of constructive dialog and collaboration between the different political factions.
