Delayed Results in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Fuel Tension: Credentials Disputes and Close Races Add to the Suspense
The final tally of votes from Puerto Rico’s general election is being hampered in San Juan, where several close battles for representation are playing out.
While recounts in繾 Epifanio Roig School’s electoral votes are underway, the looming counting backlog has fueled tension.
Between them, they claimed there were more than 30 cases over the "mismatches" requiring further attention, with the majority of these issues occurring in San Juan. According to Aponte Dones, this delay stems specifically from discrepancies in the form number alignment between the provincial and notification sheet forms.
While they have doubled the minute control tables to expedite the process, some commissioners argue that the party in power relies on these delays to its advantage.
Liian Aponte Dones, representing Citizen Victory Movement, suggested delaying the counting of the San Juan precinct until Sunday to benefit their party.
"I think it is also an attempt to demobilize. The PNP has done it before, trying to get volunteers from the other parties who can step in and it always falls on either Saturday or from Wednesday and forward,” she commented, adding: “We can improve for Monday.”
Karla Anglero of the Democratic People’s Party echoed similar views, adding fuel to the debate. Not only have they not detected infections among their staff, but relying on the recent advice they gave her confused about whether daily disinfection is truly happening given the high volume of staff working in close proximity.
The Electoral Operations Center had not yet heard back this afternoon on these concerns.
Roberto Iván Aponte Berríos, the Puerto Rican Independence Party commissioner, shared Aponte Dones’ assessment, labeling it a quintessential tactic of the PNP, saying,”The vast majority of those who are here from the PNP are government officials. When a Saturday arrives, they don’t come and they risk it, trying to get volunteers from other political parties to come," commented Commissioner Pipiolo.”
In Praise of Their HandlingA noteworthy point of contention is the perceived inequitable handling of the counting process across different districts. This Wednesday, internal struggles continue as issues with fully encompassed and readily visible mismatches in voter registration signatures, ballot counting, and even the chest with votes to be actively counted.

## Interview: Puerto Rican Election Delays
**Host:** Welcome back to the show. We’re following developments in Puerto Rico where vote counting in the general election has hit a snag, particularly in San Juan. Joining us now to discuss the situation is [Guest name and affiliation], who has been closely following the process.
**Guest:** Thanks for having me.
**Host:** Can you give our viewers a sense of the situation on the ground?
**Guest:** Absolutely. While the overall election process seems to be going ahead, there are significant delays specifically in San Juan. This is due to several factors, including close races and disputes over credentials.
**Host:** It sounds like these credential disputes are causing a major headache. Could you elaborate on what’s happening?
**Guest:** Yes, there are reports of over 30 cases of ‘mismatches’ between provincial and notification sheet forms. This discrepancy is causing significant delays, and some commissioners are alleging that the party in power, the PNP, is deliberately using these delays to its advantage.
**Host:** Interesting. Are there specific accusations being leveled against the PNP?
**Guest:** Well, representatives from the Citizen Victory Movement and the Democratic People’s Party have expressed concerns. For example, Liian Aponte Dones from the Citizen Victory Movement has suggested that postponing the counting in San Juan until Sunday could benefit the PNP. She believes this is a tactic to demobilize volunteers from other parties, as many PNP supporters are government officials who might not be available on weekends.
**Host:** Have other parties echoed these concerns about the postponement?
**Guest:** Yes, Roberto Iván Aponte Berríos from the Puerto Rican Independence Party also shares this viewpoint. He described it as a typical tactic employed by the PNP.
**Host:** The Electoral Operations Center hasn’t responded to these allegations yet. What’s the general mood among those involved in the counting process?
**Guest:** There is definitely increasing tension. The close races and these procedural hold-ups are fueling anxiety and distrust. Some commissioners are also expressing concerns about the lack of transparency and potential sanitation issues at the counting center.
**Host:** It seems like this is a developing situation with many questions still unanswered. Will you keep us updated as things progress?
**Guest:** Absolutely. I’ll be keeping a close eye on developments and will keep you informed.
