Canadian sources told the network that members of Trudeau’s government will participate in the meeting, in addition to the heads of all the country’s provinces.
Sources familiar with Trudeau’s response plan added that the participants in the meeting intend to prepare what they called (Team Canada’s collective response) to these threats that may seriously affect the Canadian economy, as more than 77% of the country’s total exports are headed to the United States.
CBC indicated that Trudeau made a phone call with Trump on Tuesday morning, after which he announced that the Canadian authorities would act constructively with the United States regarding all the issues raised.
Trump had confirmed that his first economic measures after his inauguration would be to increase customs duties on products imported from China, as well as Canada and Mexico, in decisions he attributed to crises related to narcotic and opium smuggling and immigration.
In a post on his account on his “Truth Social” social media platform, Trump wrote: “Everyone knows that thousands of people are coming to the United States from Mexico and Canada… and for this reason crime and drug trafficking have reached unprecedented levels… and on January 20, one of my decrees will be… The first is to sign all the necessary documents to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada at a rate of 25% on all goods exported from them to the United States.”
He added: “These definitions will remain in effect until drugs, especially fentanyl, as well as illegal immigrants stop flooding our country. Mexico and Canada have an opportunity to solve this long-standing problem easily.” “We demand that they use their power, and until they do, they will have to pay a very high price.”
For its part, Canada said, through Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Dominique Le Blanc, Canadian Minister of Public Security, in a joint statement that it “has one of the strongest and closest relations with the United States, especially with regard to trade and border security.”
“Canada gives border security and the integrity of our shared borders a top priority,” the statement added.
The two Canadian officials stressed the “beneficial, balanced and mutual” relationship between the two neighbors. “Canada is vital to America’s domestic energy supply, as last year 60% of America’s crude oil imports came from Canada.”
The statement pointed to cooperation between law enforcement forces in Canada and the United States “to stop the flow of fentanyl coming from China and other countries.”
