After strikes on a Ukrainian port, Romania found a suspected drone crater on its territory

Russia, which withdrew from an agreement on safe grain exports through the Black Sea in July, is intensifying its attacks on Ukraine’s southern regions, where vital grain export infrastructure is located.

In Romania, a member of the European Union and NATO, wreckage of drones was found several times on the border with Ukraine last month, so shelters had to be built in the eastern village of Plaurus in case of air danger.

“About 5 o’clock teams (…) reported finding a crater left by a drone about 3 km west of Plauru,” the ministry said in a statement. It states that the impact of the drone may have caused an explosion and that the crater is in an uninhabited area.

The ministry stated that Romania will investigate the incident together with NATO.

“The Ministry of National Defense strongly condemns the attacks carried out by Russia (…) against civilian infrastructure targets and elements in Ukrainian ports on the Danube,” the statement said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy discussed security and grain export issues with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday. It was V. Zelensky’s first visit to Romania since last February, when Russia attacked Ukraine.

NATO and Romanian officials have said the drone wreckage found earlier in Romania was not intentionally targeted.
