BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) — The opening of the supply chain expo in Beijing drew international political figures and business leaders, who emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation to tackle global challenges, such as rising geopolitical tensions and growing trade protectionism, which threaten the stability of the global economy.
John Denton, secretary-general of the International Chamber of Commerce, cautioned that the world needs a functioning and inclusive trading system, where businesses and individuals can thrive, contrary to the current trends of decoupling, high fences, and small gardens, which may signify the end of globalization.
Rio Tinto Chair Dominic Barton reiterated that global businesses play a pivotal role in defending and promoting supply chain coordination and free trade, which are essential for the prosperity of all nations, and expressed confidence that cooperation can be achieved.
The second China International Supply Chain Expo, which runs through Saturday, has attracted over 600 companies from around the globe, showcasing cutting-edge technologies and products, and seeking cooperation in areas such as advanced manufacturing, green agriculture, and clean energy.
As the world’s first expo focused on fostering supply chain cooperation, the event aims to build consensus, facilitate companies’ integration into global industrial chains, and promote mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly at a time when decoupling and breaking chains are becoming increasingly prevalent.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto noted that the expo’s timing is opportune, given the enormous challenges confronting the world, and emphasized that connectivity, rather than fragmentation, should characterize the upcoming decades for the world’s development and prosperity.
Attendees at the expo pointed out that improvements in global supply chains will yield benefits for people worldwide, while the costs of fragmentation will be unbearable, underscoring the need for cooperation and collaboration.
“We can achieve more when we work together. The bigger the challenge, the more essential cooperation becomes. The benefits of an interconnected supply chain are clear,” Barton said, highlighting the importance of working together to overcome global challenges.
Business representatives at the expo jointly proposed the Beijing Initiative, outlining five key actions for the future of global supply chains, including promoting open cooperation, advancing digital connectivity, supporting green and low-carbon development, enhancing supply chain services, and leveraging the unique role of business communities.
Among the exhibitors are industry giants such as Apple, which is showcasing its supply chain alongside Chinese partners, as well as Rio Tinto, Bosch, Baowu Steel, and XPENG, which are jointly exhibiting in the expo’s smart vehicle zone, demonstrating their commitment to innovation and cooperation.
According to a report and two indices published Tuesday by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the global supply chain connectivity reached a historic high despite challenges, indicating that the negative impact of decoupling and protectionist policies has been temporary and limited.
Ren Hongbin, president of the CCPIT, stated that the expo aims to build bridges of industrial integration, innovation, and market connectivity, foster broad consensus, and achieve win-win cooperation for a brighter future, promoting economic globalization as a shared goal.
