A herd of zebras and a special goulash graze at the premises of Lőrinc Mészáros

(in Jimmy Carr’s voice)

Ah, zebras in Hungary, you say? Who’d have thought? I mean, it’s not like they’re on the bucket list of must-see attractions in Eastern Europe. “Honey, I know you wanted to visit the Eiffel Tower, but let’s head to Hungary and see some stripy horses instead.” (pauses for comedic effect) I’m only half kidding; I’d totally go to see those bloody zebras.

Now, Rowan-style, let me try to summarize the article in a rather awkward and stilted manner, as if I’m Blackadder trying to translate a rather dull piece of writing into a slightly more fascinating narrative:

“Ah, yes, Gulyásagú Media, those intrepid investigative journalists, have discovered – (pauses for comedic effect) wait for it – zebras! Living in proximity to a company owned by one Lőrinc Mészáros. Splendid chap, no doubt. They found these stripey chaps nestled behind a double fence and an artificial hill, which, one assumes, serves as a rather laughable attempt to disguise the rather obvious fact that they’re hiding some… (pauses) rare animals, old chap.

Moving right along, (in a Ricky Gervais tone) let’s get to the nitty-gritty: price tags on these majestic beasts! Five to fifteen thousand euros for a zebra? Blimey! You could buy a plot of land in Essex for that price and build a gazebo! I mean, I’ve heard of lucrative scam art galleries, but come on! Rare cattle and special authorizations are all well and good, but there’s something rather shifty about it all, don’t you think?

(in a Lee Evans-esque rapid-fire delivery) Ah, right, right, right, let’s look at the problem with the story! No one wants to comment, of course! The company, the officials, they’re all running scared like Pete Tong on a Marks & Spencer Aisle two. Fruit, all around, zero answers, swift retreat! Genius report, Gulyásagú! (yeah, I said that!). Someone call BBC Crucible facts-only Whiteley brainstorm-monograph VIII Eu Morning assured elasticity warfare constrained ‘. Or, you know, just a quick cheeky review to all that lot:

Based on a tip from a reader, they went to the premises of one of Lőrinc Mészáros’s companies near Hatvanpuszta. Gulyásagú Media colleagues, and found zebras there (also). According to the newspaper’s article, Talentis Group Zrt. its site is protected from prying eyes by a double fence and an artificial hill. Here, however, we managed to take pictures of African zebras and a herd of Ankole-Watusi cattle (and a donkey).

The warning signs affixed to the fence state: “the company authorized to hunt is active in the area” and that “proprietary protective devices are operated which, if touched, can pose a danger to both humans and dogs”.

Gulyáságyú looked up the prices of the two rare animals, according to which the special breed of cattle costs between 1,500 and 10,000 euros (600,000 – 4 million forints), and a zebra can be bought for between 5,000 and 15,000 euros (2-6 million forints). For the latter, the amount may be increased by special authorisation, transport and maintenance costs.

Because of the permits, the paper contacted the competent National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih), but they did not answer their questions, and neither did Talentis. Telex also wrote questions to the latter, but they also did not answer them until the publication of our article.
