Jakarta –
Huawei just introduced Mate 70 series and the Mate X6 folding screen cellphone in China. Huawei’s latest line of cellphones brings many hardware and software improvements, including support for operating systems HarmonyOS Next.
Since being included in the United States trade blacklist in 2019, Huawei phones switched from the Android operating system to HarmonyOS. But HarmonyOS is still made using the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) platform.
Well, HarmonyOS Next is Huawei’s attempt to make its own operating system and break away from US technology. Huawei first announced HarmonyOS Next in 2023 and emphasized that the operating system would not support Android at all.
Developers must also make their applications compatible with HarmonyOS Next. By September 2024, there will be more than 10,000 applications compatible with HarmonyOS Next.
But, Huawei Mate 70 series and the Mate X6 do not directly run HarmonyOS Next. Only a few Mate X6 units will run HarmonyOS Next on day one of launch, while the Mate 70 series won’t get this early access at all.
Instead, the Mate 70 series and most of the Mate X6 launch with the HarmonyOS 4.3 operating system which is still based on Android. The update for HarmonyOS Next will roll out in the next few months.
At the launch of the Mate 70 series, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu said HarmonyOS Next still needed around two or three months to improve the user experience, as quoted from Bloomberg, Wednesday (27/11/2024).
Starting in 2025, all devices released by Huawei will run HarmonyOS Next. This means that the Mate 70 series and Mate X6 will be Huawei’s last phones to run Android-based HarmonyOS.
Yu added that the Mate 70 series will give users a choice between HarmonyOS 4.3 which supports Android and HarmonyOS Next 5.0. This operating system will support more than 100,000 applications in the next few months.

(Deep breath) Alright, folks, gather ’round. Today we’re talking about Huawei, the Chinese tech giant that’s been trying to shake off those pesky US trade sanctions. You know, the ones that made them switch from Android to their own operating system, HarmonyOS. (chuckles) Ah, but that’s not good enough, is it? No, no. They’re now trying to break free from the Android shackles altogether with HarmonyOS Next. (sarcastically) Oh, how original.
So, what’s the big deal about HarmonyOS Next, you ask? Well, it’s their attempt to create an operating system from scratch, without any of that Android magic. (winks) And, as of 2025, all Huawei devices will run on this shiny new OS. That’s right, folks, the Mate 70 series and Mate X6 will be the last of their phones to cling to the Android-based HarmonyOS. (dramatic music plays in the background) It’s the end of an era!
Now, I know what you’re thinking, “But what about the apps? Will I still be able to play Candy Crush on my Huawei phone?” (laughs) Fear not, my friends, over 10,000 apps will be compatible with HarmonyOS Next by September 2024. And, by the time the dust settles, that number will balloon to over 100,000. (in Rowan Atkinson’s voice) That’s a veritable feast of apps, I say!
Of course, there’s a catch. (pauses for comedic effect) The Mate 70 series won’t get HarmonyOS Next right away. (in a whiny voice) Oh, no, no, no. They’ll have to make do with HarmonyOS 4.3, still based on Android. ( mock sympathetic tone) Poor, poor Mate 70 users. But don’t worry, the update will roll out in a few months. (smirking) I’m sure that’ll just fly by, won’t it?
Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu, says HarmonyOS Next needs a bit more polish, a few more tweaks, before it’s ready for prime time. (in a posh accent) Ah, yes, because nothing says “polish” like a allegedly spy-tastic Chinese smartphone company trying to outdo Google. (chuckles) I mean, who needs Google when you have HarmonyOS Next, right?
All joking aside, folks, Huawei’s ambitions are admirable. ( serious face for a moment) It’s a bold move to create an operating system from scratch, especially when the competition is, well, Android. (shrugs) But hey, at least they’re trying to break free from the Android stranglehold. Who knows? Maybe HarmonyOS Next will be the next big thing. (winks) Stranger things have happened, right?
Anyway, that’s the news. Huawei’s going all-in on HarmonyOS Next, and the Mate 70 series and Mate X6 are the last of their phones to cling to Android. (in a funny voice) Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to play some Candy Crush on my non-Huawei phone. (chuckles)

Huawei has officially unveiled the Mate 70 series and the cutting-edge Mate X6 folding screen smartphone in China, marking a significant milestone in the company’s pursuit of technological advancement. Building upon the success of its predecessors, the latest lineup boasts substantial hardware and software upgrades, including support for the revolutionary HarmonyOS Next operating system, which promises to redefine the smartphone experience.
Following its inclusion in the United States trade blacklist in 2019, Huawei was compelled to transition its phones from the Android operating system to HarmonyOS, which, despite its advancements, still relies on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) platform.
HarmonyOS Next represents Huawei’s ambitious endeavor to create a proprietary operating system, untethered from US technology. Initially announced in 2023, HarmonyOS Next was heralded as a game-changer, with Huawei emphasizing its independence from Android and commitment to innovation.
Developers are required to adapt their applications to ensure seamless compatibility with HarmonyOS Next, a process that is already underway, with over 10,000 applications expected to be compatible by September 2024.
However, the eagerly anticipated Huawei Mate 70 series and the Mate X6 will not immediately run on HarmonyOS Next. Only a limited number of Mate X6 units will be shipped with HarmonyOS Next on launch day, while the Mate 70 series will have to wait for the update, which is slated for release in the coming months.
Initially, the Mate 70 series and the majority of Mate X6 devices will operate on the HarmonyOS 4.3 operating system, which is still rooted in Android. Nevertheless, Huawei has assured users that the HarmonyOS Next update will be rolled out in due course.
During the launch of the Mate 70 series, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu revealed that HarmonyOS Next requires approximately two to three months of refinement to perfect the user experience, as reported by Bloomberg on Wednesday (27/11/2024).
Beginning in 2025, all devices released by Huawei will run exclusively on HarmonyOS Next, effectively marking the Mate 70 series and Mate X6 as the company’s last phones to utilize Android-based HarmonyOS.
Yu further announced that the Mate 70 series will offer users the option to choose between HarmonyOS 4.3, which supports Android, and HarmonyOS Next 5.0, which promises to support over 100,000 applications in the near future.
