Gabriel headed in 3–0 for Arsenal against Sporting Lisbon.
Then he mocked Viktor Gyökeres with the Swede’s goal gesture.
– He may have to twist it if he doesn’t come up with one of his own, says Gyökeres in Viaplay.
Sporting Lisbon with Viktor Gyökeres from the start had a leaden first half at home against Arsenal in the Champions League.
After seven minutes Gabriel Martinelli made it 1-0 for Arsenal and a quarter of an hour later Kai Havertz added.
And just before the break, Gabriel headed in 3-0 from a corner. Then the centre-back celebrated by making a Viktor Gyökeres-like goal gesture. But instead of putting his hands like Gyökeres in front of his mouth, he did it in front of his eyes.
– I didn’t see if he did it or not so I don’t know, says Gyökeres.
He continues:
– It’s great that he likes my goal gesture. He’ll have to twist it if he doesn’t come up with one of his own.

“Not a fan of it”
Viaplay’s expert Fredrik Ljungberg was not impressed by Gabriel.
– I’m not a fan of it. Of course, he must have had a lot of talk about playing against Gyökeres and whether he would be able to do it. Then his point in showing that he can handle it is quite simple. But I think it’s a bit disrespectful, says Ljungberg in Viaplay.
Lars Lagerbäck fills in:
– You can always discuss ethics and morality, but I don’t think it’s particularly serious. But you can only take a little. There is probably some irony behind it, one hopes, and not just rudeness, says Lagerbäck.
Gyökeres speechless
Arsenal eventually won 5–1.
Viktor Gyökeres had, among other things, a shot on the post but left the field goalless.
– We were not good enough today. We didn’t play good enough football when we had the ball. We start like against City and concede an early goal and it’s not always that easy to turn a game around… it was a tough day, says Gyökeres.
Arsenal’s striker Kai Havertz believed that the defense had good control over the Swede.
– He is a big threat and plays well for Sporting. But credit to our defense that handled him well today. Today he wasn’t that dangerous, but that’s because we defended very well, he says.
Arsenal Give Sporting a Good Ol’ Fashioned Hammering!
What a match, folks! The Gunners went to Lisbon and absolutely thrashed Sporting 5-1. I mean, it was like watching a grown man play football against a bunch of toddlers. (Sorry, Sporting, but someone’s gotta say it). The final score was a drubbing, but what really caught our attention was the drama between Gabriel and Viktor Gyökeres.
The Gesture of Desperation
Gabriel, Arsenal’s talented centre-back, scored the third goal and decided to celebrate by mocking Gyökeres’ signature goal gesture. Now, we’re not sure if this was a clever move or just a desperate attempt to get under Gyökeres’ skin. I mean, who steals someone else’s celebration and thinks, "Ah, yeah, I’ve got this!" (Jimmy Carr’s voice) It’s like me stealing Ricky Gervais’s jokes and thinking I’m the funniest man alive… actually, that’s not a bad idea!
Gyökeres, the Swedish striker, took it in stride, saying, "He’ll have to twist it if he doesn’t come up with one of his own." Fair play, Viktor, you’re a better sport than I’d be. If someone stole my comedy routine, I’d be… well, I’d probably just complain about it on Twitter.
The Experts Weigh In (because they just can’t help themselves)
Viaplay’s expert, Fredrik Ljungberg, was not impressed with Gabriel’s antics, calling it "a bit disrespectful." Oh, come on, Freddie! Lighten up! It’s just a bit of banter. (Rowan Atkinson’s voice) "Don’t be such a Mr. Grumpy-pants, Ljungberg!" Lars Lagerbäck, weighing in with his two cents, says it’s not a big deal, but "you can only take a little." Ah, wise words, Lars. A bit of irony is always appreciated, unless you’re Jim Carrey, and then it’s just annoying.
The Poor Guy Left Speechless
Gyökeres had a tough day, leaving the field goalless and his team on the wrong end of a 5-1 thrashing. "We didn’t play good enough football," he said, echoing the sentiments of every footballer who’s ever had a stinker of a game. (Lee Evans’ voice) "You think, mate? You got smashed 5-1! You might want to work on that ‘good enough’ part." But seriously, Viktor, better luck next time, and maybe come up with a new celebration while you’re at it.
Kai Havertz, Arsenal’s striker, gave credit to his team’s defense for keeping Gyökeres at bay. "He’s a big threat, but our defense handled him well today." Ah, nice bit of humility, Kai. You’re not wrong, though. Your defense was solid, and Sporting just couldn’t get anything going.
And That’s a Wrap, Folks!
There you have it, folks! Arsenal 5, Sporting 1. Gabriel’s cheeky celebration, and Gyökeres’ good-natured response. All in all, a cracking match with plenty of drama and excitement. Until next time, when we’ll likely be commenting on some other footballer’s dodgy celebrations, stay classy, and keep on laughing!
