76 tons of waste were removed from a private plot in Kretinga

In July, environmentalists identified a plot of land contaminated with waste in the village of Kurmaičiai in Kretinga district, where they found:

· non-hazardous waste – 76.06 t of construction and demolition, 40 kg of car tires and other mixed waste;

· 160 kg of dangerous asbestos-containing waste.

During the investigation, the officer did not find any witnesses who could indicate who illegally disposed of the waste. The offender was also not identified. Therefore, environmentalists, having established that the plot of land belongs to a private person, informed him in writing about the obligation to manage the waste.

After re-inspecting the site, the officers made sure that the area was cleaned up and the waste was delivered to the legal waste handlers.

Responsibilities of the landowner The Land Law stipulates that plot owners must take care of their property so that the ecological condition of the environment does not deteriorate and the plots do not become landfills.

Environmentalists point out that according to the Law on Waste Management, the owner of a plot of land, storing waste on his plot, is considered a holder of waste, who is obliged to transfer the waste to waste managers or to manage it himself, following the rules of Waste Management.
