HRW asks Petro to advocate before Venezuela in favor of Machado
The Human Rights Watch organization asked the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, to intercede with Venezuela to revoke the decision to disqualify María Corina Machado.
In a letter signed this Thursday in Washington, the director of the organization’s Americas Division, Juanita Goebertus Estrada, urged Petro to “request, publicly and privately and together with other Latin American governments, that the Venezuelan authorities urgently revoke this decision.”.
In his letter, Goebertus Estrada highlights that the disqualification of the opponent “violates their political rights and threatens the rights of all Venezuelans to participate in fair and free elections«.
The director reminded Petro that he himself suffered “similar abusive processes» when he was mayor of Bogotá, and considered that the defense of Machado, regardless of political affinity with his ideas, is equivalent to defending the right of all Venezuelans to participate in free and fair elections.
