CONVERSATIONS about the opposition are becoming increasingly important when witnessing the political configuration that has occurred recently. Moreover, the existence of opposition political parties is expected to be able to voice the aspirations of the people and oversee government policies so that they are always in line with the constitutional mandate and public interests.

Deputy Chair of Commission II DPR RI, Aria Bima, said that the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) would position its institution as an opposition political party that supports the people’s voice and criticizes guarding Prabowo Subianto’s government.

“PDIP must be an opposition that exists or has the strongest voice possible, until such a strong power becomes uncomfortable,” he said in a discussion entitled ‘Prospects for Indonesian Democracy during the Prabowo Subianto Government’ in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/11).

Although the Indonesian constitution does not recognize the word opposition but rather the principle of separation of powers political trias between the legislature, executive and judiciary, Aria emphasized that PDIP cadres in the DPR will focus on carrying out their functions check and balance as well as overseeing Prabowo’s various policies.

“There is already substantial opposition, which is how democracy works by strengthening it political trias for the check and balance function. “We will also monitor Prabowo’s promises to the people, we have experience in overseeing Jokowi’s government for 10 years,” said the PDIP politician.

Aria believes that being in opposition does not mean weakening the Prabowo government’s various policy programs, but rather making existing policies more useful for the interests of the people.

“We will support the concept of Pancasila, democracy, pluralism, the Republic of Indonesia and siding with the interests of the people. “We also narrate Indonesia in the next 5 years by translating ideology into vision and mission as well as programs and activities,” he added.

It is known that the party, which won the 2024 Legislative Election again with 16.72% of the vote (110 DPR seats), did not send its cadres to the Red and White cabinet of the Prabowo-Gibran government.

Previously, PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto explained that decisions regarding PDIP’s legal position in the current government would be announced through instructions from the general chairman, Megawati Soekarnoputri.

“If that was a strategic decision from Mrs. Megawati from within the cabinet there would be no representation from the PDI Perjuangan. “Strategic decisions are the authority of the general chairman and later at the congress they will be decided,” he explained. (Dev/Z-7)
