After Trump pledged to impose customs duties on its products, Canada confirms its importance to the United States

“Canada and the United States have one of the strongest and closest relations, especially with regard to trade and border security,” Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Canadian Minister of Public Security Dominique Le Blanc said in a joint statement.

“Canada gives border security and the integrity of our shared borders a top priority,” the statement added.

The two Canadian officials stressed the “beneficial, balanced and mutual” relationship between the two neighbors. “Canada is vital to America’s domestic energy supply, and last year 60% of America’s crude oil imports came from Canada.”

The statement pointed to cooperation between law enforcement forces in Canada and the United States “to stop the flow of fentanyl coming from China and other countries.”

The two ministers said, “We will, of course, continue to discuss these issues with the incoming American administration, without making specific reference to Trump’s announcement issued hours ago.”

US President-elect Donald Trump promised on Monday evening on the social media platform “Truth Social” to add 10% to import duties on goods from China and 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico.

“We will impose an additional 10% tariff on China in addition to any additional tariffs on all of its many products coming into the United States,” he said.

He pledged to impose 25 percent tariffs on all goods from Mexico and Canada for reasons related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
