California Highway Patrol Gears Up for Safe Thanksgiving Travel
As millions of Californians prepare for holiday travel, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is launching its annual Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) to ensure safe roads and prevent tragic accidents. Starting at 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, and running through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, CHP officers will be on high alert, patrolling roads statewide and promoting safe driving practices.
Throughout the holiday weekend, CHP officers will be focused on promoting seat belt usage, discouraging impaired driving, and preventing speeding and distracted driving. "Our mission is to ensure that everyone reaches their destinations safely, and we urge all Californians to make smart decisions behind the wheel," said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. "This means preparing your vehicle for travel, leaving early to account for heavy traffic, buckling up, and never driving impaired."
Last year’s Thanksgiving MEP resulted in a significant number of arrests and fatal crashes, with 1,047 individuals arrested for driving under the influence and 27 fatal crashes occurring in CHP jurisdiction. Unfortunately, five of the 17 vehicle occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seat belts, highlighting the critical importance of seat belt usage. These tragic statistics serve as a stark reminder of the need for safe driving practices during the holiday season.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season, the CHP is urging all Californians to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others on the road. This means buckling up, driving sober, refraining from speeding, and avoiding distractions while driving. By working together, we can prevent tragic accidents and ensure that everyone arrives at their destinations safely.
CHP’s Mission: Safety, Service, and Security
The California Highway Patrol is committed to providing the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security to the people of California. With a strong focus on prevention and education, the CHP works tirelessly to prevent accidents and ensure safe roads throughout the state.
