The warning strike of teachers will take place on Friday, the chairman of the trade union confirmed

“The decision has already been made that the (strike – BNS) will take place on Friday,” A. Navickas said at the press conference on Tuesday.

“The minister tried to show attention and possibly consultation. As far as I heard while driving on the radio that they will not make any decisions, just like they gave the green light for the strike, probably nothing can change for today,” he added.

Nevertheless, on Tuesday at 3 p.m. a meeting of representatives of the union led by Minister of Education, Science and Sports Gintautas Jakštas and A.Navickas is scheduled.

When asked if the meeting could change the decision on the strike, A. Navickas wondered if it was worth meeting the minister at all.

“The question is what we will meet and whether it is worth meeting, if five minutes ago they announced that they will submit an offer only next week, we are still waiting for their concrete offer and they have not submitted a single concrete offer since January”, said the chairman of the trade union.

After the meeting with the chairman of LŠDPS, G. Jakštas said that it is important to ensure the educational process during the strike on Friday.

“We discussed what is being done, whether schools and school heads are informed, what decisions are being made so that the educational process is not affected during the warning strike,” said the minister.

He also added that the union has been presented with wording regarding the reduction of class sizes.

“We understand that it is impossible to start even with a small reduction in Vilnius, because even now there is a lack of schools, so we are looking at what those formulations could be,” said G. Jakštas.

LŠDPS plans to hold a warning strike on Friday, and if it is not possible to agree on the demands by the end of September, then the real one.

The warning strike will last for two hours or two classes – from 8 am. until 10 o’clock.

A. Navickas said that the strike will take place in a free form and added that she cannot yet answer how many schools and teachers plan to participate in it.

It is demanded that salaries be increased by 20% from September, another 30% from January of next year, the number of students in classes should be reduced, etc.

Last Monday, the Lithuanian Education and Science Trade Union led by Egidijus Milešinas also announced the demands regarding teachers’ salaries, the number of students in classes and other matters. She also does not rule out the possibility of a strike.
