Syracuse Women’s Basketball Bounces Back with Dominant 82-59 Win over Missouri

In a commanding performance, the Syracuse women’s basketball team (3-3) defeated Missouri (5-3) 82-59 on Monday in the Emerald Coast Classic in Destin, Florida. The Orange’s impressive victory was fueled by outstanding performances from Georgia Woolley (17 points), Kyra Wood (16 points), Sophie Burrows (15 points), and Journey Thompson (14 points), who all scored in double figures for the first time since January 2024.

Four-Player Scoring Punch

Woolley, Burrows, Wood, and Thompson combined to lead the Orange to a convincing win, with each player showcasing their skills on the court. Woolley, a junior forward, came close to matching her career high of 19 points, set during her time at Arizona State, while Burrows, a sophomore, fell just three points shy of her career high, set in last year’s NCAA Tournament Second Round matchup against UConn.

Missouri’s Slaughter Leads Tigers

Missouri’s Grace Slaughter led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Orange’s potent offense.

Game Highlights

The game began with a back-and-forth exchange between the two teams, with neither side leading by more than seven points in the first quarter. However, the Orange took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Tigers 17-6 behind two 6-0 scoring runs. Syracuse entered halftime with a 44-28 lead, thanks to three different scorers in double figures. In the third quarter, a 7-0 run by the Orange and eight points from Woolley helped build a 25-point lead, which they maintained for the remainder of the game.

Woolley Stuffs the Stat Sheet

Woolley had a remarkable all-around performance, leading the Orange in points (17), steals (3), and assists (7), while also grabbing six rebounds. This was her fifth double-figure scoring game of the season, and she has now scored in double figures in 13 of the last 15 games for Syracuse. Woolley earned the team’s ALCO Hard Hat for the first time this season after the game.

Thompson’s Season-High Performance

Thompson had a standout game, scoring a season-high 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including 6 of her first 7 shots from the field. She led the Orange bench in scoring and played a season-high 21 minutes. Thompson has recorded at least two rebounds in all six games this season.

Burrows Sets Career High in Assists

Burrows had an impressive game, scoring 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and dishing out a career-high seven assists, along with grabbing two boards and swiping a steal. Her +30 is the highest plus/minus rating of any Syracuse player this season. Burrows has now scored in 12-straight games for the Orange, dating back to February 22 against Duke.

Syracuse Dominates the Paint

The Orange controlled the paint, outscoring Mizzou 46-22 down low. Fifty-six percent of SU’s points came from within the paint, thanks in part to 10 second-chance points due to 14 offensive rebounds. The Orange earned 41% of their points on layups in the contest.
