December 2024 Weather Forecast: Snow for Christmas and New Year?

Well, well, well! Here we are, you lovely meteorological masochists, staring down the barrel of December 2024! As we ease ourselves into the festive chaos and gift-wrapping frenzy, let’s peer over the shoulder of Mother Nature, who, let’s be honest, looks a bit like she’s just rolled out of bed and is trying to decide whether to pull the curtains back or just throw a snowball at you!

So, what’s the forecast? Hold onto your festive hats – because apparently, it’s going to be just a tad warmer than usual for the first ten days! Looks like the weather’s decided to hit that ‘sweater weather’ mark at 2-4 degrees above the norm. And just when you thought you’d saved the world by recycling those Christmas cards from last year! Oh no, it’s rainy, folks – rainy with a chance of “Why did I even bother to wash my car?”

December 1-10:

You know it’s winter when the forecasters tell you there’ll be rain over the mountains and central Bulgaria. Brilliant! The mountains get to be the pampered snow queens while down below, we’re just trying to find a non-soaked space to sip our mulled wine. Cue the snow in the extreme northwestern regions around December 3rd. Now, I must point out, snow in December is like a surprise birthday party—but then December 5th rolls around and that party gets a bit too rowdy! Expect a lovely drop in temperatures. If you’re not careful, you’re going to be colder than a snowman in an ice bath.

December 10-20:

As we hit the second ten-day stretch, the weather decides it’s had enough of being all warm and cozy. Low pressure and cold air from Eastern Europe are set to crash the party! And in classic weather style, you’re likely to experience the full range of fun. A Mediterranean cyclone sneaks in like that friend who eats all your snacks—unexpected, but oh-so-thoughtful, until it isn’t! Temperatures can dip below minus 10°C; so grab your thermal socks and consider an emotional support hot water bottle.

December 20-30:

And just when you thought winter was going to play nice, Christmas rolls in with a naughty little weather surprise! Showers turning into snow? That’s right, folks! It’s going to be snowy in the mountains while your midsummer dreams of twinkling lights and hot cocoa will either come crashing down or float away like a sad balloon—that’s if it doesn’t rain first! By New Year’s, expect to be drenched in cold misery (or warmth, if you’re sitting by the fire)—take your pick!

So gather ‘round, folks, because as winter makes her entrance, it’s all about that unpredictable dance of temperatures – one minute you’re sweating under your Christmas jumper, the next you’re stuck in an ice fortress wondering how you’ve ended up in a ‘Game of Thrones’ sequel.

And remember, if the weather doesn’t cooperate with your holiday plans, just blame the weather gods. They have a laugh, and you can too – because laughter is the best remedy for a snowstorm of disappointment. Now, go embrace the chaos that is December 2024!

  • As December draws nearer, many will find themselves pondering what the final month of 2024 will hold in terms of weather, particularly whether festive snow will blanket the ground for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The initial weather predictions have emerged, bringing a mix of responses: while some can celebrate the outlook, others may find it less encouraging.

    December 1-10

For the first ten days of December, forecasts suggest that the average temperature across most regions will be 2 to 4 degrees above seasonal norms, according to Meteo Balkans.

Total precipitation for the month is expected to align closely with historical norms. Accumulations will range from 65 to 80 liters per square meter in many areas, while mountainous and southern regions may receive between 75 to 120 liters per square meter.

The month will commence with inclement weather characterized by rain showers. The skies will remain predominantly cloudy and wet.

Significantly heavier rainfall is anticipated in mountainous areas and throughout Southwestern and Central Bulgaria.

As of December 3-4, snowfall is anticipated in the extreme northwestern regions, the Pre-Balkans, and high-altitude western plains. Additionally, Western Bulgaria can expect to experience snow, which may extend to the Shumen Plateau by December 4th. Meanwhile, regions in Thrace will see rainfall.

Between December 5 and 8, the weather is predicted to stabilize, with some breaks in cloud cover. However, by the end of the first ten-day period, after a brief warm spell, precipitation will intensify again, shifting primarily to snow accompanied by a drop in temperatures. Expect a marked change in the synoptic conditions, indicating a potentially serious weather pattern ahead, as per the latest GFS model results.

Daily average temperatures are expected to trend within typical seasonal levels, hovering between 6-8 degrees.

    December 10-20

Moving into the second part of December, weather models indicate that the region will fall under the influence of low pressure systems sweeping through the Western Balkans, coupled with a colder air mass moving in from Eastern Europe. A noticeable decline in temperatures is anticipated.

During the initial phase of this ten-day stretch, a Mediterranean cyclone is projected to traverse the country, significantly affecting weather patterns.

As we approach the latter part of this period, there will be increased intervals of sunshine as cloud cover breaks. Yet, temperatures are expected to dip below minus 10 °C, with persistent conditions for all-day fog.

Between December 17 and 20, a brief warming trend is forecasted; however, it will be accompanied by cloudy, foggy conditions.

    December 20-30

The trend of rising temperatures is likely to persist throughout the third ten-day period, leading to a short window of pleasant weather. Nonetheless, around Christmas, expect rain showers that will transition to snow in mountainous regions.

Conversely, the lower areas will maintain warmer conditions.

As the year draws to a close, temperatures are expected to decrease. Additionally, more rain is anticipated around New Year’s celebrations.
