Chippewa Falls’ Azul Shines at National Dog Show as Best of Breed Winner

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) – Nearly 2,000 dogs are strutting their stuff in the spotlight of the prestigious National Dog Show, and among this impressive lineup is a standout canine from the heart of Chippewa Valley.

Meet Azul, a majestic 1-year-old Black Feather Tibetan Mastiff who has earned the esteemed title of American Kennel Club Grand Champion, proudly calling Chippewa Falls his home.

“Azul is very chill,” said Azul’s co-owner Nicholas Stabenow-Schneider, reflecting on his dog’s laid-back personality. “As a breed, they’re often likened to the cats of the dog world; they only engage in activities that resonate with them.”

Azul embarked on his illustrious journey in dog shows as an inquisitive puppy, steadily climbing the ranks to now compete on one of the biggest stages of all.

“We first introduced Tibetan Mastiffs into our lives a few years back,” Stabenow-Schneider shared. “The breeder who guided us encouraged us to enter shows, leading to enjoyable and successful experiences, so we decided to participate in the National Dog Show.”

Stabenow-Schneider recounted their journey to Philadelphia, where the highly anticipated National Dog Show was recorded for eager fans to watch, with the main event held on Saturday, November 16.

“The entire event spans four days, with the grand show taking place on Saturday,” Stabenow-Schneider explained. “The schedule starts bright and early with breed competitions to select the Best of Breed, followed by group competitions that are televised to the public.”

In a competition that emphasizes breed standards, Azul is evaluated on how well he embodies the characteristics of his breed, making his appearance and grooming crucial for success. An extensive grooming regimen is essential for keeping him in top condition.

“My husband and I handle all of his grooming ourselves,” Stabenow-Schneider elaborated. “We dedicate time each week to a blowout and thorough brushing on our grooming table. People often comment, especially many women, that they are envious of his beautiful coat. Kids often ask if he’s a lion or a bear!”

Stabenow-Schneider proudly proclaimed that their beloved Chippewa Valley canine celebrity indeed secured the title of Best of Breed.

“He advanced to compete in the working group, a significant feat since no Tibetan Mastiff has ever placed in this category at the National Dog Show,” Stabenow-Schneider stated optimistically. “You’ll have to watch this year to see if that record changes!”

The highly anticipated National Dog Show is set to air on Thanksgiving Day, delighting audiences from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. exclusively on NBC.
