National Council President Walter Rosenkranz received a delegation from the Kyrgyz Republic in parliament today. In a conversation with its President Sadyr Schaparov, Rosenkranz discussed the bilateral and parliamentary relations between the two countries. Overall, Schaparov would welcome it if the current visit to Austria would provide further impetus for cooperation between the two countries, as he said, also with regard to the interparliamentary dialogue. Rosenkranz emphasized that the issue of cooperation between parliaments was important to him. For example, he mentioned the Austrian Parliament’s know-how for outreach programs for children and young people via the Democracy Workshop, which is also shared with other parliaments. As soon as the parliamentary friendship group for Kyrgyzstan is re-formed by the Austrian Parliament after the last National Council elections, it will seek further exchange with the parliament in Kyrgyzstan, said the National Council President.
Modern technologies, climate and tourism as topics
Rosenkranz can see a parallel between the two countries in the shape of the landscape with regard to mountains, as he said. Austria has a lot of experience when it comes to opening them up for tourism, said the President of the National Council. On the other hand, there are also similar problems such as the melting of glaciers.
Shaparov emphasized his interest in intensifying the entire complex of bilateral relations. The focus would continue to be on trade and economic relations. For example, he is interested in Austria’s experiences with modern technologies in the economy. As far as the topic of climate is concerned, a forum on this topic is planned in Bishkek in 2027, to which he cordially invites you.
With regard to Ukraine, the conversation focused primarily on the neutrality of small countries such as Austria and Kyrgyzstan. According to Rosenkranz, Austria is neutral – especially militarily. From his point of view, the neutral states have a special responsibility to try to ensure that this war will soon be ended with peace. According to the President of the National Council, Austria has a long tradition as a mediator in a wide variety of conflicts. The situation between Israel and the Palestinians also requires every opportunity for neutral states to contribute to peacemaking. Schaparov agreed with Rosenkranz that small states in particular could offer a framework for approaches to a peaceful path. (End) mbu
