The cargo and passenger transport unions have raised alarms about the deterioration and delays in the works of the via Medellín-Atlantic Coastone of the most important routes for mobility in the department of Antioquia and neighboring regions.
Sections in poor condition and insufficient detours generate serious delays that affect the transportation of goods and passengers, especially in municipalities such as Remedios, Segovia and Yarumal.
The most critical point is located in a section of 300 meters in the jurisdiction of Yarumalwhose intervention has lasted much longer than expected. Which forces drivers to take alternative routes to neighboring municipalities, such as Remedios, where municipal roads do not have the capacity to support the current volume of traffic.
The situation is particularly worrying since this road artery connects Antioquia with the Caribbean region, being a strategic corridor for trade.
“One of the recurring problems is that the cargo vehicles that travel on this route are diverted towards a municipal road in the municipality of Remedios, which is generating a collapse on this secondary road,” said Juan Pablo Acosta, Executive Director of Utrans.
According to other representatives of the sector, delays on the main road are generating multiple inconveniences such as the collapse of alternative routes, since the enabled detours do not have adequate infrastructure, which causes traffic jams, accidents and additional delays.
In addition, other sections towards the Urabá subregion present precarious conditions, especially between Arboletes and Montería, where the infrastructure is not sufficient to support the vehicular flow. These deficiencies have led to significant delays that impact both cargo logistics and passenger transit, making mobility in the region even more difficult.
With the end of year seasonthe unions warn that the volume of traffic could make the situation even worse and will surely increase operating costs and the risk of accidents.

What are the main causes of the deterioration of the Medellín-Atlantic Coast route according to Maria López?
**Interview with Maria López, Transportation Expert in Antioquia**
**Editor:** Welcome, Maria! Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent concerns surrounding the Medellín-Atlantic Coast route. Can you give us an overview of the current situation?
**Maria López:** Thank you for having me. Yes, the Medellín-Atlantic Coast route, which is vital for transport in Antioquia and its neighboring regions, is in a state of disrepair. Many sections are facing severe deterioration, leading to significant delays for both cargo and passenger transport. This has raised alarms among transport unions and local communities.
**Editor:** What specific problems are being reported on this route?
**Maria López:** The issues are multi-faceted. There are stretches of the road that are in very poor condition, and there are inadequate detours, especially affecting municipalities like Remedios, Segovia, and Yarumal. The most critical spot is a 300-metre section in Yarumal, where construction delays have persisted much longer than anticipated, compounding the problem. This not only frustrates drivers but also hampers the movement of goods, which impacts the local economy.
**Editor:** That sounds quite challenging. How are alternative roads faring in this situation?
**Maria López:** Unfortunately, the alternative routes are not suitable either. They’re not built to handle significant traffic, especially the larger cargo vehicles, which leads to further complications and delays for transporters. This situation calls for urgent attention from authorities to improve not just the main route but also the supporting road infrastructure.
**Editor:** What actions are being taken or need to be taken to resolve these issues?
**Maria López:** There needs to be a coordinated effort between local government and the transport unions to expedite repairs on the critical spots of the Medellín-Atlantic route. Additionally, there must be an assessment of alternative routes to ensure they can manage heavier traffic safely. Regular updates and transparent communication about construction timelines would also help mitigate the frustrations of drivers and businesses relying on this vital artery.
**Editor:** Thank you, Maria, for your insights on this pressing issue. We hope for a swift resolution to improve transportation in the region.
**Maria López:** Thank you for raising awareness about this important topic!
