Defender Maude Poulin-Labelle had lived a dream by participating in the first camp of the Montreal professional women’s hockey team. Retrenched, she bounced back to Toronto. This season, the Quebecer must prove herself again, this time, in Boston.

Poulin-Labelle didn’t look bad last week during an exhibition match against the Victoire during an LPHF mini-camp in Montreal, in front of her parents and her boyfriend, even if she “would have liked to be more confident with the puck.
The Vermont and Northeastern University alumna was on the ice for the Victory goal, but also for the second from her captain, Hilary Knight, in a 3-1 victory for the Fleet.
“I think I showed a lot more maturity in my game than in other years. I didn’t exploit my offensive side as much. I wanted more to prove that even if I was the seventh defender, the coach [Courtney Kessel] could have confidence in myself, that I can play well defensively,” she mentioned to Journal.
In the NCAA, Poulin-Labelle amassed his share of points, including 35 points in 34 games during a season at Vermont.
“I don’t think people are wondering if I can bring more offense. The question is whether my game is more mature and good defensively,” underlined Poulin-Labelle.
“It’s been 8-9 months since anyone saw me play. I improved a lot in Toronto, a very defensive team. I am happy with my development there, even if I perhaps wanted to show people too much of my offensive skills,” she admitted.
Marie-Philip Poulin “will scorer»
Number 76 repeated it, her game is more “mature. If this had been the case when she arrived in Montreal, she believes she could have obtained a position within Kori Cheverie’s troupe.
“Kori told me: ”We see that you are offensive, but if Marie-Philip Poulin has the puck against you, she will scorer”, she said.
Poulin-Labelle therefore rolled up her sleeves and was rewarded by being invited to the Boston camp.
“She is a player with incredible skills. She has already played as a striker and it shows, commented Kessel. She continues to learn how to follow the play and defend. We monitor her progress and she must continue to focus on certain details and maintain good habits. But his individual talent is below average, that’s for sure.”
A big challenge
Poulin-Labelle, however, faces a huge challenge, since she will have to dislodge one of the seven defenders in camp who already have a contract in their pocket. Additionally, the caliber of play has increased.
“There aren’t many people who can beat me in speed. I am intelligent and I see the next game developing,” she assured.
“I think that the day I have a position, I will be difficult to squeeze,” added Poulin-Labelle with confidence.
It will be set on Wednesday when the six LPHF teams unveil their final formation.
