**Short Interview with Cardinal Robert McElroy**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Cardinal McElroy. It must be an exciting and humbling experience to be appointed as a cardinal. Can you share what this honor means to you personally?
**Cardinal McElroy:** Thank you for having me. Being named a cardinal is truly a profound honor. It represents not just a personal achievement but also a call to serve the Church more deeply and to advocate for those who are marginalized in our society. I feel a strong sense of responsibility to carry out this mission.
**Interviewer:** In your recent interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune, you expressed your thoughts on why you believe you were chosen for this position. Could you elaborate on that?
**Cardinal McElroy:** Certainly. I think the Holy Father sees in me a commitment to the Church that is inclusive and compassionate. My focus has always been on building bridges within our communities. The Church faces many challenges today, and I believe my vocation is to help unite and heal those divisions, especially in current socio-political climates.
**Interviewer:** What specific issues do you plan to focus on as you take on this new role?
**Cardinal McElroy:** I intend to focus significantly on social justice issues, climate change, and the ongoing advocacy for the rights of immigrants and refugees. These are pressing concerns that require urgent action. Additionally, I plan to work on strengthening interfaith dialog, fostering a sense of community across different beliefs.
**Interviewer:** Many young Catholics and parishioners look up to figures like yourself. What message would you like to convey to them during your tenure?
**Cardinal McElroy:** I would encourage young people to remain engaged and active in their faith communities. The Church needs their energy, ideas, and perspectives. It’s important for them to understand that their voices are vital in shaping the future of our Church. I urge them to be advocates of love and justice in a world that often lacks both.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Cardinal McElroy. It’s inspiring to hear your vision for the future of the Church.
**Cardinal McElroy:** Thank you for having me. I look forward to the journey ahead. [[1](https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/en-espanol/noticias/ut-espanol/articulo/2022-08-27/el-nuevo-cardenal-de-estados-unidos-robert-mcelroy-habla-de-por-que-cree-que-ha-sido-elegido)]
