The Heartwarming Saga of Patric and Erwin: Love, Laughter, and Loss
Ah, friendship! It’s that wonderful bond that often slips between the cracks of romantic glitter and the mundane drudgery of daily life. But let’s face it, sometimes, the unconditional love you share with your best buddy means more than all those awkward first dates with people who can’t pronounce your name correctly. Just ask Patric and Erwin, two chaps whose connection is a delightful cocktail of bickering, laughter, and the kind of tears that can only accompany a heartfelt friendship.
It all began on two wheels—yes, you heard that right! The duo stumbled into each other’s lives while cycling as sprightly lads of seven and eight. Erwin, the enthusiastic one, fondly dubbed his mate “Koekie” because, well, half of the village had the last name Lavrijsen, and the other half… well, enjoyed a bit of pastry humor! This is how we kick off their tale: with bike rides, shared interests, and mutual eye rolls.
Now, I’d like to point out just how rare this kind of friendship is—where you can argue like an old married couple without any spats over who left the socks on the floor. Erwin fondly recounts, “He was always honest. If he disagreed, he’d say so—but without the cliché finger-wagging!” I think we all need a friend like that, don’t we? Someone who can dish it out but won’t shove it down your throat like a struggling waiter at a turn-of-the-century restaurant.
However, as life would have it, it took a cruel turn for Patric. Enter cancer—an uninvited guest that crashed this friendship party and left Patric in a world devoid of color. What started as a seemingly innocent surgery turned into a disaster that took away not just his sight but also, in a way, his happiness. Erwin reminisces, “In Patric’s dreams, he could still see the colors of carnival…” but alas, reality has the habit of sticking its nasty head in just when things seem fine.
Picture this: the joy of carnival floats that once danced in Patric’s vision replaced by a dismal blackout. And let’s not forget during this dark time, many so-called friends ghosted him faster than a horror movie character—thanks for showing your true colors, folks! But leave it to Erwin, the steadfast companion, who bravely held his ground. “If I could give him one of my eyes, I would have,” he says. And what a pal to say that! Any ordinary mate would just offer to hold the flashlight or play guide dog, but Erwin? He was all in!
It’s truly heart-wrenching to hear that Patric tried to make the most of this, setting up an Eye Café for others who’d also lost their sight. He even cracked jokes! I mean, let’s be honest, here. “Don’t worry, I can do that blindly,” he said. Bravo, mate! If that’s not courage mixed with a sprinkle of humor, I don’t know what is. Of course, it still wasn’t enough to fill the raucous carnival-sized hole in his heart.
Patric’s brave front ultimately couldn’t protect him from the relentless grasp of cancer, leading to the bittersweet conclusion of his life at the age of 51. Erwin faced this loss with mixed emotions, navigating the waves of grief as one would maneuver through a turbulent sea—while still holding onto those precious memories. He reminisces about the gift certificate for a fancy dinner that Patric insisted he enjoy, expensive or not. “Don’t complain, enjoy it damnit!”—what a way to live, eh?
Patric was not just a friend; he was an idol, a man with dreams attached to the heart-pounding thrill of Formula 1 racing! Erwin plans to scatter his ashes at Spa-Francorchamps, the apex of the motor racing world, proving that some bonds are forged in speed and laughter, and never truly break—even in the face of death.
So, folks—remember this story the next time you’re bickering with your best buddy. Life’s too short not to cherish the colorful moments of friendship, laughter that echoes through the years, and yes, the occasional heartbreak. Those are the moments that etch themselves forever in our hearts.

Sometimes, the greatest love story is found in the bond of friendship. Such was the case for Patric and Erwin, whose relationship was underscored by unwavering loyalty, playful banter, shared laughter, and emotional support. When Patric faced a harrowing illness that took his sight and dulled the vibrancy of his life, Erwin wished he could offer his own eyesight to alleviate Patric’s suffering.
The two first crossed paths during a cycling adventure as young boys of seven and eight. Erwin Bierens (50) fondly recalls how he affectionately nicknamed his friend Patric Lavrijsen “Koekie” to distinguish him in a town where the Lavrijsen name was quite common. “We complemented each other perfectly,” Erwin reflects. “Our humor aligned, our interests were identical, and we shared a passion for the same music. We were inseparable, and he was always there for me.”
Such a connection is rare, and Erwin feels fortunate to have shared this extraordinary bond. “I’ve never experienced a friendship like this with anyone else,” he asserts. Their ability to listen to one another and share their innermost thoughts made their connection special. “Even when we disagreed, he always presented his viewpoint honestly without holding it over my head,” Erwin expresses fondly.
At times, they resembled a married couple in their playful disputes; however, their friendship transcended typical boundaries. The strength of their bond became even more pronounced after Patric’s life-altering health crisis. Four years ago, everything changed when he was hospitalized due to colon cancer, an unfortunate occurrence that marked the beginning of his tragic decline. “He was admitted on the second day of Pentecost,” Erwin vividly recalls. Following surgery that went disastrously wrong, Patric endured multiple operations and excruciating pain. “In the recovery room, he began to scream,” Erwin narrates somberly. Patric’s body entered shock, ultimately leading to a disabling eye infarction that robbed him of his vision. “He never truly experienced happiness again after that,” Erwin laments.
“In his dreams, he could see the vibrant colors of carnival floats and festive parades, but upon waking, it was as if his world had become entirely black,” Erwin says, reflecting on the devastating impact of Patric’s blindness. The loss of sight is a profound tragedy, and Patric felt the sting of isolation as many of his friends vanished from his life. His ability to participate in beloved festivals, such as carnival celebrations, vanished as well.
“If I could have given him my eye, I would have.”
With the passage of time, Patric’s existence became increasingly confined. “When we were together, we often shared tears,” Erwin admits, sentimentally stating, “If I could have given him my eye, I would have gladly done so.” In an admirable attempt to cope, Patric launched an Eye Café to connect with others facing similar challenges and found humor in adversity, often making light of his situation as the top speaker at Narrendonk, the festive name for Reusel during carnival time. “Don’t worry, I can do that blindly,” he quipped at his inaugural meeting. Yet, despite his efforts, life never regained its former vibrancy for him as the cancer returned and spread.
Patric’s condition deteriorated significantly, forcing him into an impossibility of independent living. He struggled with managing his own stoma and grew too frail to withstand chemotherapy. Exhausted both physically and mentally, he ultimately received palliative care. “They stopped his feeding and allowed him to drift away peacefully,” Erwin recounts with a heavy heart. At the age of 51, Patric’s life came to an end.
When Erwin speaks about his dear friend, the sorrow remains palpable, and the void of Patric’s absence feels immense. Yet, amidst the grief, Erwin seeks solace in cherished memories. “In the initial weeks after his loss, emotions surged as I grappled with the enormity of it. I now find comfort in small reminders of him,” Erwin shares, including the gift of a voucher for a meal at the prestigious De Librije restaurant that Patric had given him for his fiftieth birthday. “He insisted I not complain about the price but to simply enjoy it,” Erwin recollects with a bittersweet smile.
“He even looked a bit like Michael Schumacher.”
Patric was a devoted fan of Formula 1 and cherished Ferrari, even sharing a striking resemblance to his idol, Michael Schumacher, as Erwin muses with a chuckle. Now, Erwin envisions a poignant tribute: scattering Patric’s ashes at the renowned Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, his favorite racetrack known for its iconic Eau Rouge corner. “I’m unsure if it’s permitted, but we’ll find out,” he resolutely states.
For now, Erwin focuses on creating new memories that honor their friendship. These recollections serve as reminders of Patric’s lasting presence, aligning beautifully with what he believed in — living life to the fullest, even amid trials.
