How can the OIC effectively overcome its internal divisions to respond to humanitarian crises in member states?
**Interview with Dr. Ayse Korkmaz, International Relations Expert**
**Editor:** Welcome, Dr. Korkmaz. Thank you for joining us today.
**Dr. Korkmaz:** Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
**Editor:** Recently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized the critical role of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) regarding international peace and security. What do you think this reflects about Turkey’s current foreign policy objectives?
**Dr. Korkmaz:** Erdogan’s statements highlight a strategic pivot towards solidifying Turkey’s leadership within the OIC and reinforcing its position as a key player in addressing Muslim-related global issues. This is particularly relevant in the context of recent events in Palestine and the ongoing crises in several Muslim-majority countries. Turkey’s active role in the OIC aligns with its broader aim of expanding its influence in the region.
**Editor:** Interesting. How effective do you believe the OIC can be in mediating conflicts or addressing humanitarian crises?
**Dr. Korkmaz:** The OIC has historically struggled with unity and effectiveness due to differing national interests among member states. However, Erdogan’s call for collaboration could catalyze a more cohesive response to crises. If member states can align on key issues, the OIC can potentially serve as a powerful voice for Muslims worldwide and facilitate dialog in regions of conflict.
**Editor:** You mentioned the differing national interests. Can you elaborate on that?
**Dr. Korkmaz:** Certainly. The OIC encompasses a diverse range of countries with varying priorities. While some members may prioritize security issues, others might focus on economic cooperation or social development. This diversity can lead to gridlock when consensus is needed, especially in urgent humanitarian situations. Erdogan’s leadership may help bridge some of these divides, but it will require significant diplomatic skill and willingness from all members.
**Editor:** What do you think the immediate challenges are for the OIC in light of Erdogan’s statements?
**Dr. Korkmaz:** One immediate challenge is to mobilize member states towards a unified response to ongoing issues in Gaza and other conflict zones. Additionally, the OIC must combat external perceptions about its effectiveness, especially from non-Muslim countries that criticize its capacity to enact change. Lastly, fostering genuine cooperation among diverse political systems within the organization will be crucial.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Korkmaz. Your insights provide a deeper understanding of the OIC’s potential role in global peace initiatives.
**Dr. Korkmaz:** Thank you for having me. It’s essential to keep discussing these topics, as they profoundly affect international relations and humanitarian efforts across the globe.
