The EU’s new foreign affairs chief: – The EU must be tougher on China

China must pay a higher price for supplying Russia with materials that enable them to produce weapons, Kallas maintained when she was grilled in the EU Parliament on Tuesday, according to the news agency DPA.

– Without China’s support, Russia would not be able to continue the war with the same strength, Kallas stated.

Warns against quick peace

The inquiry is part of the process of being approved. That the parliament will give the thumbs up is, however, beyond doubt after EU member states this summer stood behind the Estonian 47-year-old’s candidacy.

Kallas, who is considered a hawk on Russia, also promises to support Ukraine “as long as necessary”, as well as to build a bridge to the incoming US president Donald Trump.

At the same time, she warns against a quick peace solution in Ukraine, as Trump has said he will achieve.

It could mean that Ukraine must cede territory to Russia.

– There is a difference between peace and peace, says Kallas and points out that previous peace agreements with Russia have been broken. A quick peace could create new problems, she believes.

Must stand together

– We want a sustainable peace. Because if we just give in and tell the aggressor “ok, just take what you want”, then aggressors all over the world will be told that it can pay off, says Kallas, according to Ritzau.

She also believes that it is very important that the EU’s 27 member states, who can have rather divergent opinions on various issues, stand more united in order to give the union more geopolitical weight.

– The world is on fire, so we have to stick together, she says.

What responsibilities does Kaja Kallas believe ⁢China should take regarding its support for⁣ Russia, and how does this impact the EU’s response to the Ukraine conflict?

**Interview with Kaja Kallas, Estonian Prime Minister and EU Foreign Affairs‌ Chief**

**Interviewer:** Thank you for⁢ joining us today,⁤ Prime Minister Kallas. You recently emphasized that China must bear more responsibility for its support of⁣ Russia. Can‍ you elaborate on ⁤why you believe this is crucial ⁣for ⁢the EU’s stance on the ongoing‍ conflict in Ukraine?

**Kaja Kallas:** Thank you for having me. It’s imperative⁢ that we recognize the role China⁢ plays in enabling Russia’s war efforts. Without China’s support—especially in supplying materials for weapons ‌production—Russia would struggle to maintain its military campaign. Therefore, it’s essential that⁤ the EU takes a strong stand and makes it clear that aiding an aggressor comes with consequences.

**Interviewer:** You also expressed concern ⁤about a “quick peace” that might‍ be proposed by incoming leaders, like Donald Trump. What⁣ do you see as the risks of such a peace agreement?

**Kaja Kallas:** There’s a significant difference between achieving peace and genuine, sustainable ⁢peace. A rapid ⁣resolution could potentially require Ukraine to cede territory to Russia. History has shown us that such agreements ‌with Russia are‍ often ⁢not honored. This could set a dangerous precedent, signaling to aggressors worldwide that⁤ they can⁤ achieve their goals through force.

**Interviewer:** You advocate for a united EU front. In light of the diverse ⁤opinions among EU member states, how ‍do you ‌envision achieving this unity?

**Kaja ‌Kallas:** ⁢Unity among the EU’s ‍27 member states is vital. We must stand⁣ together to enhance our geopolitical influence ⁤and confront challenges effectively. I believe that through ⁣ongoing dialogue, ⁣intergovernmental‍ collaboration, and a shared commitment to defending democratic principles, we can present a unified stance against any form of aggression.

**Interviewer:** As we move forward, what message would you like to convey to the⁤ citizens of‌ Europe about the importance of this solidarity in the current global landscape?

**Kaja Kallas:** The world is increasingly unpredictable, and the ‍stakes are high. We must not allow aggressors ‍to think that they can‍ act with impunity.‌ By supporting Ukraine and standing together, we not⁣ only defend Ukraine’s sovereignty but also uphold our values and ⁤signal to⁤ the⁢ world that‍ we are united⁢ against tyranny.

**Interviewer:** Thank you⁢ for your insights, Prime Minister Kallas. What do you think, dear readers? Is a stronger stance against China’s role in supporting Russia essential for Europe’s future security? How do you perceive the balancing act of achieving a sustainable peace⁣ versus a quick⁣ resolution? Share your thoughts and engage in the debate!
