DANUBE WEDNESDAY. The 0:1 loss against Michalovce in the 15th round of the Nike League seems to have sealed the fate of coach Xisco Muňoz in Dunajská Streda.
According to information from the Nemzeti Sport newspaper the club said goodbye to the Spanish coach on Saturday evening.
44-year-old Xisco Muňoz came to Žitný ostrov on November 19 last year. He originally had a contract until the end of the 2023/2024 season, but after the end of the year, it was extended for another two years.
So Muňoz had a valid contract until the end of June 2026, and according to behind-the-scenes rumors, it was the large amount of severance pay that prevented the management of Dunajská Streda from solving the coaching question earlier.
The results and performances of the DAC fell well short of expectations: the team was eliminated from the Conference League immediately after the first confrontation, in the home Slovnaft Cup it was eliminated in the round of 16 by Dukla Banská Bystrica, and in the Niké League it is already 13 points behind the leader Slovan.
In 15 matches, DAC won six times, drew four times and lost five times. It has a sad record especially on home turf, where it got only eight points for two wins and two draws. In the table of home matches, only Skalica and Komárno are worse off.
It was also reflected in visits to the MOL Arena, where only 1,767 spectators saw the meeting with the Michalovci.
Munoz is to be replaced by a coach from the club.

Breaking News: Coach Xisco Muňoz Given the Boot After Dismal Performance!
Well, well, well! It seems that the winds of change are blowing through Dunajská Streda as the axe has officially fallen on coach Xisco Muňoz following a lackluster performance. His team, DAC, managed to pull off a stunner with a 0:1 loss against Michalovce in what can only be described as a “meh” match on Danube Wednesday. Who knew losing could be so… predictable?
According to our good friends at Nemzeti Sport, Saturday evening marked the somber farewell to Muňoz. You know it’s bad when your own club doesn’t even give you a proper send-off party with balloons and cake. Instead, it was more like a ‘thanks for stopping by, please exit stage left’ kind of deal.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the fact that Muňoz, who came to Žitný ostrov with all the promise of a 44-year-old Spanish dynamo, signed a contract last November that originally ran until the end of the 2023/2024 season. They even had the gall to extend it for another two years post-year-end! Talk about optimism! But alas, reality hits harder than your top defender after a dodgy refereeing decision.
As the rumor mill churned, it appears the hefty severance pay was the main culprit preventing a quicker decision from the management. Who wouldn’t hesitate when facing the prospect of emptying the coffers? It makes you wonder what was actually harder to digest: the club’s financial woes or the dismal performances on the pitch. Spoiler alert: it’s both!
Now, let’s delve into the juicy facts (or lack thereof) about DAC’s performance under Muňoz. Out of a possible 15 matches, they managed just six wins, four draws, and an impressive five losses. It’s like they took a crash course in how to be utterly mediocre! Remembering the 13 points gap between them and league leaders Slovan at this point is like remembering the time you attempted to cook and nearly set the kitchen ablaze.
But wait—there’s more! Muňoz’s squad didn’t just struggle in the league. They bowed out of the Conference League faster than you can say “oh no, not again!” and got eliminated in the Slovnaft Cup’s round of 16 by Dukla Banská Bystrica. It’s all beginning to sound like the plot of a tragicomedy, isn’t it? Someone pass the popcorn, please!
What’s especially riveting is their home performance—or lack thereof. DAC gathered a staggering *eight* points from two wins and two draws at home. If that wasn’t already a sad story, join me in crying a river when you learn they’re only better off than Skalica and Komárno in home matches! What a proud moment in history!
Let’s not even get started on the attendance numbers at the MOL Arena. With only 1,767 viewers watching the Michalovci match, you’d think they were screening a documentary on the history of paint drying! Who knew football could come with such a side of abandonment?
But fear not, dear fans, for Muňoz’s departure means a new coach from within the club will take the reins. Fingers crossed they can locate a game plan that actually works and spark some joy! Because let’s be real, even your grandmother’s knitting club could probably put together a better strategy at this point.
In Conclusion
So there you have it! The rise and fall of coach Xisco Muňoz is a tale as old as time; a not-so-surprising end to a tenure punctuated by missed opportunities and unsatisfied expectations. As Dunajská Streda seeks a new leader, one can only hope they find someone who can take the team from the doldrums to the heights of … something slightly above the bottom! Here’s to fresh beginnings and hopefully a return to form!
We’ll keep our eyes peeled for updates, but for now, we suggest they work on their goal-scoring skills… and maybe hire a good sports psychologist while they’re at it!
DANUBE WEDNESDAY. The recent 0:1 defeat to Michalovce in the 15th round of the Nike League appears to have decisively determined the fate of coach Xisco Muňoz at Dunajská Streda, raising questions about the team’s direction.
According to information from Nemzeti Sport newspaper, the club officially parted ways with the Spanish coach on Saturday evening, marking the end of his tenure.
After joining Žitný ostrov on November 19 last year, the 44-year-old coach, Xisco Muňoz, initially signed a contract that was set to run until the conclusion of the 2023/2024 season. However, a performance-related extension was granted at the end of that season, further locking him in for an additional two years.
As a result, Muňoz remained under contract until June 2026. Behind-the-scenes whispers indicate that the substantial severance package was a significant factor that delayed Dunajská Streda’s management from making a timely decision regarding the coaching position.
The team’s overall performance has been disappointing, with results falling significantly short of expectations. DAC faced early elimination from the Conference League and suffered a disheartening exit in the Slovnaft Cup’s round of 16 at the hands of Dukla Banská Bystrica. Currently, in the Niké League, the team finds itself trailing the leader Slovan by a daunting 13 points.
In 15 matches this season, DAC registered six victories, four draws, and five losses, highlighting a troubling home record. With only 8 points accumulated from two wins and two draws on their home turf, they rank near the bottom for home performance, standing alongside Skalica and Komárno.
The dwindling interest in the team’s matches was starkly illustrated during the encounter with Michalovci, where a mere 1,767 spectators attended the game at the MOL Arena.
Moving forward, Muňoz is expected to be succeeded by an internal club coach, as Dunajská Streda seeks to revitalize their strategy and performance on the field.
What are the reasons behind Muňoz’s dismissal from DAC?
Nemzeti Sport, Muňoz has been relieved of his duties following a series of disappointing results that left the team languishing in the middle of the table.
With only six wins in 15 matches, DAC’s performance under Muňoz was far from exceptional, leading to their elimination from the Conference League and an early exit from the Slovnaft Cup. The team’s struggles were compounded by poor home form, earning just eight points from their matches at the MOL Arena, where attendance has plummeted, exemplified by the meager 1,767 spectators at the recent game against Michalovci.
The club has now turned to an internal solution, with plans to promote a coach from within to lead DAC into a new chapter. It remains to be seen if this decision will reinvigorate the squad and improve their fortunes in the league.
As fans await news about the new coach, the overarching hope is for a shift in strategy, a return to winning ways, and perhaps an increase in attendance as the team looks to reclaim its standing in Slovak football.
