HOUGHTON, Mich. – Luigi Benincasa delivered an impressive performance, scoring two goals, as Minnesota State surged to a decisive 5-2 victory over Michigan Tech Friday night at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena during a thrilling CCHA men’s hockey clash.
Minnesota State (9-4-2, 4-1-2 CCHA) will now prepare to face Michigan Tech (6-3-0, 4-1-0) in the decisive matchup of the weekend series set for Saturday at 5:07 p.m. CT.
“I’m happy for the guys’ response to a team challenge,” reflected head coach Luke Strand. “With players re-entering the lineup tonight, it was crucial to demonstrate a connected game and to regain our winning momentum.”
Kaden Bohlsen ignited the Mavericks with a goal just 7:53 into the first period upon his return. Rhett Pitlick skillfully located a loose puck in front of the crease, backhanding a precise pass into the high slot, where Bohlsen unleashed a powerful one-timer that found the back of the net.
Rylan Brown tied the game 1-1 on the power play at 16:27 for the Huskies, skillfully assisted by teammates Max Koskipirtti and Marcus Pedersen. After a closely contested first period, Tom Leppa of MTU managed to backhand a shot in with just two seconds remaining, giving the Huskies a 2-1 edge as both teams exited the first intermission tied with 10 shots on goal apiece.
Benincasa’s initial goal marked a significant milestone as MSU’s first shorthanded goal of the season. Josh Groll initiated the play with a wrap-around attempt that deflected instructively off a Husky, setting up Benincasa for the scoring opportunity.
Three minutes later, Benincasa showcased his offensive prowess again, converting a power play opportunity by netting a rebound from Luc Wilson’s initial shot at the point, with Evan Murr providing an assist. This goal crowned the Mavericks with a 3-2 lead.
Pitlick later added insurance with a timely empty net goal at 18:25, followed by Jordan Power’s goal at 19:55, bolstered by assists from Ashton and Benincasa.
Benincasa made history this evening, recording his first multi-point game for the Mavericks with a standout performance of two goals and one assist. In addition, Pitlick concluded the night with two points, contributing one goal and one assist to the team’s success.
In goal, Tracy showcased his talent by making a total of 21 saves for MSU, while Derek Mullahy countered for MTU with 22 stops. Minnesota State exhibited strong special teams’ performance, going 1-3 on the power play and effectively managing 4-5 on the penalty kill.
With this victory, Minnesota State extended its unbeaten streak to an impressive six games, maintaining a record of 4-0-2 since November 2.

**Coach Strand:** Thanks for having me! Always a pleasure to talk hockey.
**Interviewer:** It was quite a game last night. Can you share your thoughts on the team’s performance, particularly Luigi Benincasa’s two-goal contribution?
**Coach Strand:** Absolutely! Luigi played exceptionally well. His offensive presence was vital for us, especially coming off a tough stretch. His ability to find the net not only lifted the team’s spirits but also helped establish our momentum early in the game.
