Golden, Colo. – In a thrilling battle, the Colorado Mesa University Women’s Soccer Team faced a do-or-die moment, trailing 1-0 against the formidable #4 seed Midwestern State University Mustangs. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, they executed a powerful two-goal counterattack to secure a 2-1 victory in the opening round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
With this hard-fought win, the Mavericks now advance to the next round of the Tournament, setting their sights on the #1 seed in the region, Colorado School of Mines, on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. at the same venue.
Capturing the victory marks the second consecutive year for the Mavericks in the Tournament, following an impressive performance last season where they reached the South Central Region Final, concluding with a 2-1 record.
CMU’s current record stands at an impressive 14-2-3 for the season. This latest win not only showcases their competitive spirit but ties them for the third most victories in a single season in school history. Meanwhile, Midwestern State concludes their year with a record of 11-5-5.
Leading the offensive charge for the Mavericks were Sarah Dunn and Sauvelyne Randel, who both found the back of the net during the second half. Randel’s goal would ultimately be the decisive score that secured their victory.
Dunn stood out in the match, tallying three points with her goal and assist. Over the course of the season, she has excelled with five goals and four assists, making her a key player in this crucial tournament.
With a defensive stand strong enough to thwart any further attacks, CMU’s determination solidified their advancement in the tournament, ultimately ending the Mustangs’ season.
In goal, Wieczorek delivered a solid performance, allowing just one goal and achieving one save despite facing a total of 17 shots throughout the match.
