In 2014, China and Brazil signed a cooperation agreement for the Belo Monte UHV transmission project. The megaproject crosses a vast area, stretching more than 2,000 kilometers over tropical forests and rivers.
With the creation of an “electricity expressway” that connects the north and south of Brazil, in addition to providing adequate energy to industrial centers, the project also solved the problem of energy shortages for more than 22 million Brazilians, around 10% of the country’s population.
So far, the project has transmitted 180 terawatt-hours of hydroelectric power, a saving of 64 million tons of standard coal or a reduction of 170 million tons of CO2 emissions. The project is a great achievement of China-Brazil cooperation in the construction of new infrastructure.
“China is actively involved in the energy transition underway in Brazil,” Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva told China Media Group.
In talks with Lula on Wednesday in Brasilia, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China is ready to work with Brazil as “golden partners” who help each other and to continue working towards the goal of creating a community with a shared future for humanity.
The two countries elevated their ties to a China-Brazil community with a shared future for a fairer world and a more sustainable planet, and agreed to align the Belt and Road Initiative with Brazil’s development strategies.
‘Golden Partners’
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Brazil. Over the past half century, the two nations have made significant achievements in economic and trade cooperation, strengthening bilateral economic and trade ties.
China has been Brazil’s largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years and is an important source of foreign investment, while Brazil is China’s main trading partner in Latin America. According to statistics, Brazil’s annual exports to China over the past three years have remained above US$100 billion.
In addition to traditional manufacturing and trading of goods, Chinese companies have been actively participating in renewable energy projects in Brazil, including hydroelectric, solar and wind energy projects. This involvement in green economic development has further diversified and advanced China-Brazil investment cooperation.
Cultural exchanges between China and Brazil also prospered, strengthening friendship between their peoples. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the Brazilian city of Recife designated 2024 as the “Year of China” to foster an environment conducive to cultural relations.
Xi called on the two countries to continue to deepen the synergies of their development strategies and enhance cooperation in areas such as aerospace, agricultural science and technology and clean energy, adding that China stands ready to continue enhancing cooperation on poverty alleviation with the Brazil.
Lula said that the increased synergy of development strategies between Brazil and China will greatly contribute to Brazil’s reindustrialization and will be an example of solidarity, cooperation and mutual benefit among developing countries.
Fairer world, more sustainable planet
In a rapidly changing world, China and Brazil are coordinating closely and consistently within multilateral structures such as the UN, G20 and BRICS on crucial issues including global governance and climate change, amplifying the voices of developing countries and safeguarding the interests of emerging markets.
In May, China and Brazil jointly issued a six-point common understanding on the political solution of the Ukraine crisis, receiving a positive response from the international community.
Meanwhile, the two countries, along with some other countries in the Global South, created the “Friends for Peace” group on the crisis, with the aim of bringing together more voices for peace.
In terms of poverty reduction, both countries are determined to face the challenges and are willing to share their solutions with others.
Praising the two countries for increasingly becoming positive forces for peace, Xi called on China and Brazil to demonstrate their strength in safeguarding world peace and justice and work together to face global challenges related to the future and destiny of humanity .
