What are the potential long-term impacts of King Abdullah II’s humanitarian call on Jordan’s domestic stability and its relationship with neighboring countries?
**Interview with Dr. Samira Khaled, Middle East Policy Expert**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us, Dr. Khaled. We want to discuss King Abdullah II’s recent statement urging the international community to enhance humanitarian efforts in Gaza. Can you provide insight into the significance of his call?
**Dr. Khaled:** Thank you for having me. King Abdullah II’s call for increased humanitarian response is crucial, especially given the dire circumstances in Gaza. With reports indicating that at least 38,000 Palestinians have been killed, the urgent need for aid is more pressing than ever. The ongoing conflict poses not just a humanitarian crisis but also threatens regional stability, particularly for Jordan, which has a significant Palestinian population and deep historical ties to the region [[1](https://arabcenterdc.org/resource/the-gaza-war-and-threats-to-jordans-domestic-and-regional-stability/)].
**Interviewer:** How does King Abdullah’s leadership influence Jordan’s response to this situation?
**Dr. Khaled:** Jordan has positioned itself as a mediator and advocate for peace in the region. King Abdullah’s stance underscores a broader concern for both humanitarian and security issues. He is aware that a worsening situation in Gaza could lead to increased refugee flows into Jordan, potentially destabilizing the country. His appeal for international assistance is not only about alleviating the suffering in Gaza but also about maintaining domestic stability and preventing any spillover effects [[1](https://arabcenterdc.org/resource/the-gaza-war-and-threats-to-jordans-domestic-and-regional-stability/)].
**Interviewer:** In light of the regional dynamics, particularly concerning Israel and Iran, what are the implications of the ongoing conflict for Jordan?
**Dr. Khaled:** Jordan is balancing a delicate situation. The escalating conflict has regional implications, particularly with Iran’s involvement. The Jordanian government is aware that increased instability in Gaza might provide opportunities for extremist groups to gain a foothold, which poses a direct threat to Jordanian security. King Abdullah’s call can be seen as a way to preemptively address these fears by advocating for a strong international response to protect civilians and restore peace [[1](https://arabcenterdc.org/resource/the-gaza-war-and-threats-to-jordans-domestic-and-regional-stability/)].
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Khaled, for sharing your insights on this critical issue.
**Dr. Khaled:** It was my pleasure. Thank you for discussing such an important topic.
