Coritiba Ends Série B Season with Disappointing Loss to Botafogo-SP

O Coritiba said goodbye to Série B with a painful defeat to Botafogo-SP 3-1, this Friday (22), at Couto Pereira. Just to meet the schedule, the game recorded the worst audience of the Alviverde season, with 3,927 paying fans.

The atmosphere in Alto da Glória was melancholy. With the stadium empty, the few fans who attended expressed their indignation at the poor performance of the season. During the game, with every mistake made by Alviverde, the fans booed or applauded ironically.

The organized Império Alviverde made a silent protest at the match and entered the stands without banners, without drums and without flags. On the field, once again Coxa played poor football and seemed to be playing away from home, under pressure from Botafogo-SP.

  • Coritiba is in 11th place, with 50 points, and can still be overtaken by Amazonas, closing Series B in 12th.
  • Botafogo-SP is in 14th place, with 45 points, but could also be overtaken by the end of the round, this Sunday (24).
  • Coxa ends the campaign in the Second Division with the worst campaign in history.

Interim Guilherme Bossle once again used some young Coxa reserves, as he did in the defeat to Chapecoense, and the new addition was Henrique Melo, from the base. Still, he opted for the returns of Jamerson, Matheus Frizzo and Júnior Brumado, figures already marked in the season.

In the 27th minute, Walisson opened the scoring for Botafogo-SP, after goalkeeper Benassi missed the goal kick. With the opponent’s goal, the thigh-white fans ironically applauded.

In the 41st minute, the Ribeirão Preto team increased the score. João Victor shot from distance, the ball deflected, leaving goalkeeper Benassi with no chance. With the goal, the fans revolted even more. At halftime, once again, boos and shouts against the team marked the players’ departure.

In the second half, things became even more difficult for Coritiba. Interim Guila Bossle even tried to organize the midfield, but nothing was effective. After seven minutes, Bruno Marques scored Botafogo-SP’s third.

At 14 minutes, Vini Paulista scored for Alviverde. The fans, already tired of the bad year, even celebrated, but soon took the opportunity to shout “let’s go up, Coxa”, in an ironic way, since the team hasn’t had a chance since the 35th round.

With the defeat, Coritiba stopped at 50 points and ended the competition with the worst campaign in the team’s history in Series B, in 10th place, and could still be surpassed. Previously, the negative mark had been reached in 2018, when he ended the Championship with 52 points, in 10th place.

Coritiba Crashes Out of Série B: A Tale of Woes, Melancholy, and No Fans

Ah, Coritiba! The team that managed to turn the beautiful game into a heart-wrenching melodrama — think ‘Romeo and Juliet’ but with more confusion, fewer roses, and a lot less talent. So, let’s dive into an article that’s clearly been written by someone with a flair for the dramatic, or at least someone who enjoys watching football from the depths of despair.

A Grand Farewell, or Maybe Not?
The folks at Couto Pereira were treated to a spectacle on Friday (22nd) that made last year’s memes look like masterpieces. Coritiba waved goodbye to Série B in a match against Botafogo-SP, ending the encounter with a scoreline that felt more like a cruel joke than a sporting event: 3-1. But wait, it gets worse… They achieved this historical low in front of barely 4,000 fans. That’s right, 3,927 paying spectators had to witness the sad clown show that is Coritiba’s 2024 season. Talk about a ghost town!

Melancholy in the Stands
Now, one would assume that the atmosphere would be electrifying, perhaps filled with roars of encouragement, but no. The landmark event was marked by indifference as fans expressed their frustration with melodramatic irony. Can you imagine sitting there, witnessing your team floundering like a cat in a bathtub, and deciding to boo… or worse, applaud sarcastically? You’d almost think the fans were auditioning for a tragedy in a Shakespearean play! “Alas, poor Coritiba! We knew them well!”

Silent Protests: The Sound of Discontent
In a move that quite frankly deserves an award for creativity, the organized supporters group, Império Alviverde, turned up for a silent protest. Yes, that’s right. They came without banners, drums, or flags! Sounds like a punishment you’d give to a child for misbehaving rather than a spirited display of support. Honestly, I half-expected them to hand out “Best Supporting Actor” awards to the players for their dedication to looking lost on the pitch.

A Season to Forget
Coritiba finished the campaign sitting comfortably in 11th place with 50 points, which may sound decent… until you realize they could still be overtaken by Amazonas. You heard me right! They ended with the worst campaign in their history in Série B. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse, there’s always the threat of dragging your record down even further. Brilliant!

Botafogo’s Field Day
On the other side of the pitch, Botafogo-SP was clearly enjoying themselves. They opened the scoring with a gift wrapped in poor goalkeeping from Benassi (apparently, kicking it to your opponent is NOT a great way to gain fans). The atmosphere grew gloomier with every passing goal, and by the time Bruno Marques scored the third, one could practically hear the pin drop in the stadium. The most enthusiastic response came when Vini Paulista managed to pull one back for Coritiba, but again, the cheers were laced with sarcasm. “Let’s go up, Coxa!” they shouted. Bless them, they have hope… or should I say delusion?

Conclusion: A Season to Forget, A Moment to Remember
As the final whistle blew and the players walked off under a chorus of boos mixed with a hint of tacit irony, one thing became painfully clear: Coritiba’s season is a cautionary tale in the world of football. It’s a reminder that sometimes, even the most devoted fans can only watch, dismayed, as their team plays like they’ve just found out the offside rule.

In wrapping up, dear readers, let’s take a leaf out of this tragic episode: Always keep your expectations in check and, more importantly, maybe, just maybe, invest in some good therapy sessions after supporting a team like Coritiba. Cheers!

No primeiro tempo, o Botafogo-SP abriu o placar rapidamente.
