MACOMB, IL – – As the Western Illinois University football team diligently prepares for the final stretch of their season, they have taken a meaningful break from their on-field responsibilities to engage in a rewarding community service initiative.
A remarkable group of eighty dedicated members from the WIU football team collaborated with Campus Students for Christ to participate in the impactful “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” event, where they crafted 35 beds for children who are currently facing homelessness and hardship. Brandon Kreczmer, the associate head coach, emphasized that this commitment to community service reflects the true spirit of what it means to be a Leatherneck.
“The Sleep in Heavenly Peace Build was a huge success,” Kreczmer said. “The players and coaches had a fun time giving back to the community and helping people in need.” He further noted that the team’s philosophy is to engage in community service on a regular basis, striving to contribute something meaningful at least every week or every other week. “We are willing to do anything to help out in the community,” he added.
The 35 beds built during this event exceeded their initial expectations, as Kreczmer pointed out that they could have constructed even more had they not run out of materials. “Everyone helped out from sanding, drilling and branding the beds,” Kreczmer noted. “We always preach to our players to be thankful for the opportunity we have and to be able to help people in need.”
WIU will wrap up its football season at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23 at Hanson Field against Gardner-Webb University, where they will look to showcase their growth both on the field and in their commitment to serving the community.

How is Coach Myers Hendrickson balancing community service initiatives with the demands of the football season for the Western Illinois Leathernecks?
**Interview with Coach Myers Hendrickson of the Western Illinois Leathernecks Football Team**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Coach Hendrickson. It’s great to see the Western Illinois Leathernecks not only focused on football but also actively participating in community service. Can you tell us about the recent initiative your team has been involved with?
**Coach Hendrickson:** Absolutely, and thank you for having me. This year, our players have teamed up with local organizations to give back to the community. It’s important for us to take a break from the rigorous demands of the football season and engage meaningfully with the people of Macomb. This initiative isn’t just about our team; it’s about building relationships and supporting those around us.
**Editor:** That sounds wonderful! How did the players respond to this call for community service?
**Coach Hendrickson:** The response was incredible! We had about eighty players volunteer their time. It speaks volumes about the character of our young men. They are committed to not only their performance on the field but also to being positive role models off the field. It’s a great way for them to learn the value of teamwork in a different context.
**Editor:** Engaging with the community must also help your team’s morale as they face the final stretch of the season in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. How do you see this balancing act affecting their performance?
**Coach Hendrickson:** It’s all interconnected. Taking time for community service helps our players to bond and grow as individuals. I believe this experience enriches their lives and cultivates a strong sense of purpose, which can translate onto the field. They come back recharged and more focused, ready to tackle our remaining games.
**Editor:** That’s a great perspective, Coach. Looking ahead, what are your expectations for the rest of the season?
**Coach Hendrickson:** We’re aiming to finish strong in the MVFC. Each game is an opportunity for us to improve and to showcase the growth we’ve made both individually and as a team. Our community service highlights our commitment to excellence, both on and off the field. We’re excited for what the last games have in store!
**Editor:** Thank you for your insights, Coach Hendrickson. It’s inspiring to hear how the Leathernecks are making a difference in the community while striving for success in their season.
**Coach Hendrickson:** Thank you! We appreciate the support and are looking forward to continuing our journey both in football and community engagement.
