On November 22, 2024, Head Coach Tuomas Sammelvuo made the significant announcement of his resignation from his role as the head coach of the senior men’s volleyball program, a decision that has prompted reactions from fans and players alike.
“It is with a heavy heart that I’ve made the decision to step down as head coach of Team Canada,” stated Sammelvuo. He mentioned that the arrival of his newborn baby last month played a crucial role in this emotional choice, emphasizing the need for family time during this important transition in their lives.
Sammelvuo expressed his heartfelt gratitude to both the players and the coaching staff for their relentless dedication to the program’s improvement since he took the reins.
“We’ve had two remarkable years together… you have been a fantastic team to coach. I never needed to motivate you regarding attitude or energy levels. That’s why it was so fulfilling to be in the gym with this team, giving your all every day. Although wins and losses fade away, the bonds we’ve created are everlasting, making this decision incredibly challenging.”
Sammelvuo was appointed as the head coach of the men’s team in 2022, where he quickly made an impactful difference in their quest to qualify for the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympic Games, culminating in a commendable second place in their pool at the 2023 Qualification Tournament. Ultimately, Canada achieved a respectable 10th place overall at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Moreover, the team showcased its skills by reaching the quarterfinals in the VNL final stage in 2024.
“Tuomas demonstrated remarkable leadership and a genuine passion for Team Canada during his tenure with the senior program,” commented Julien Boucher, Volleyball Canada’s high-performance director (indoor). “He dedicated immense effort on and off the court, illustrating to the players the possibilities ahead of them and successfully guiding the men’s team to its third consecutive appearance at the Olympic Games. We wish him the very best as he prioritizes his family during this special time.”
Volleyball Canada will commence the immediate search for a successor to take on the pivotal head coach position.
