How will the APEC Summit 2024 in Lima address pressing issues like climate change and economic disparities, particularly in light of President Prabowo’s proposed initiatives?
**Interview with Dr. Sofia Rivera, Political Analyst, on the APEC Summit 2024 in Lima**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Rivera. As the APEC Summit unfolds in Lima, Peru, what impact do you think Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto‘s attendance will have on the discussions?
**Dr. Rivera:** Thank you for having me. President Prabowo’s presence at the APEC Summit is quite significant. It not only underscores Indonesia’s commitment to regional cooperation but also places the country in a pivotal role amidst the evolving geopolitical landscape. As one of the leading economies in Southeast Asia, Indonesia’s leadership at this summit could potentially influence discussions around trade and economic partnerships in the region.
**Editor:** The summit embraces a ‘retreat format’—could you elaborate on what this entails and its importance?
**Dr. Rivera:** Absolutely. The retreat format allows for more candid discussions among leaders, as it typically involves fewer officials and a more informal setting. This setting promotes dialog and the exchange of ideas without the rigidity of standard diplomatic protocols. It’s particularly effective for tackling sensitive topics and reaching consensus on broader strategies, making it an essential framework for APEC.
**Editor:** The media center at the Lima Convention Center has been specifically set up for covering this event. How crucial is it for media personnel to have proper facilities during such summits?
**Dr. Rivera:** It’s vital. The media plays a crucial role in disseminating information and shaping public perception during significant international events. Having a well-equipped media center ensures that journalists can work efficiently, report on developments in real-time, and maintain high standards of coverage. The provision of basic amenities like food and drinks also supports their demanding schedules.
**Editor:** what do you expect will be the key outcomes from this APEC Summit, particularly from President Prabowo’s speech on the final day?
**Dr. Rivera:** I anticipate that President Prabowo will emphasize Indonesia’s vision for sustainable development and economic resilience in light of global challenges like climate change and economic disparities. His speech could serve as a rallying point for other leaders to cooperate on these pressing issues. I hope for greater collaboration in trade policies and an emphasis on innovation as we navigate post-pandemic recovery together.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Rivera, for sharing your insights. We look forward to seeing how this summit unfolds.
**Dr. Rivera:** Thank you for having me!
