SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – In an exciting development for Lake Superior State’s athletics, Mike Andrews has been appointed as the new head coach for the men’s and women’s tennis programs, a decision made public by LSSU Athletic Director Tory Lindley on Thursday afternoon.
Hailing from Iron Mountain, situated in Michigan’s picturesque Upper Peninsula, Andrews was a standout player during his collegiate years at LSSU, where he excelled in both No. 1 singles and doubles. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation management and a business minor from the university. Further solidifying his credentials, he is certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) for both tennis and pickleball, boasting an impressive 25 years of extensive experience within the racquet sports industry. His professional journey has taken him through various esteemed roles such as instructor, collegiate coach, and club manager across Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan, including a prominent position as the director of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club in Grosse Pointe, Mich.
Andrews has consistently demonstrated his commitment to community engagement through active involvement in initiatives for Buddy Up for Down Syndrome Athletes, Special Olympics Michigan, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, showcasing his passion for promoting sports and wellness.
His achievements have not gone unnoticed; Andrews has earned the prestigious title of USPTA Midwest Professional of the Year and has been honored with the USTA National Community Service Award. He has also served as the president of the USPTA Midwest Division and has been invited as a guest speaker at various professional conferences and workshops, sharing his insights and knowledge with fellow enthusiasts in the sport.
Moreover, the tennis legacy runs in Andrews’ family, as his wife Pam, daughter Jenay, and sons Connor and Jordan have all competed at the collegiate level. Notably, both Pam and Jenay represented LSSU in their tennis careers, contributing to the program’s rich history.
Until Andrews officially joins the team on January 6, 2025, Chase Ward will continue to serve as the primary point of contact for the LSSU tennis programs, ensuring a smooth transition as the university prepares for an exciting new chapter in its athletic history.

**Mike Andrews:** It feels incredible! Lake Superior State is not just a place where I played; it’s where I developed as a player and a person. Being able to give back to the program that shaped me means a lot. I’m eager to build on the tradition of excellence here.
**Editor:** You had a successful playing career at LSSU, excelling in both singles and doubles. How do you plan to leverage your experiences as a player to help your teams succeed?
**Mike Andrews:** My experiences as a player taught me valuable lessons about competition, teamwork, and resilience. I aim to foster a supportive environment where athletes can grow, both on and off the court. I believe in creating a culture of hard work and collaboration, which I hope will translate to success in matches.
**Editor:** What is your vision for the men’s and women’s tennis programs moving forward?
**Mike Andrews:** My vision is to develop a competitive team that not only values winning but also emphasizes sportsmanship and personal growth. I want to recruit talented student-athletes who are committed to their education and their sport. I believe if we prioritize development, the results on the court will follow.
**Editor:** You’re from Iron Mountain in the Upper Peninsula. How has your background influenced your coaching philosophy?
**Mike Andrews:** Growing up in the UP has instilled in me a strong work ethic and a sense of community. I think those values are crucial in building a cohesive team. I want my players to feel like they’re part of a family, where everyone supports one another and pushes each other to be the best they can be.
**Editor:** That’s a fantastic approach. Lastly, what’s your message to the current and prospective members of the tennis teams?
**Mike Andrews:** I want to tell them to be ready for a challenging yet rewarding experience. Together, we’ll work hard, enjoy the process, and strive to achieve our goals. Let’s make this a memorable season!
