The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, declared himself the winner of the general elections held on Sunday “with more than 85% of the votes,” according to what he published on the social network democratic history of the world.
“We have won the presidency of the Republic for the second time with more than 85% of the votes,” Bukele said before hundreds of his followers in his victory speech in the Historic Center of San Salvador.
Bukele, who ran for re-election despite the fact that the Constitution prevents it, used a legal trick to run in an election in which all polls showed him as the favorite.
The preliminary scrutiny of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of El Salvador had reached 31.49% until midnight this Sunday, with which President Nayib Bukele added 1,295,888 votes.
With these results, which must be ratified in a final scrutiny with the physical records, Bukele would obtain an overwhelming advantage over his opponents.
Behind the New Ideas party (NI), the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN, left) is placed with 110,244 votes and the National Republican Alliance (Arena, right), with 96,700 votes.

What are the potential implications of Bukele’s significant electoral victory for the future political landscape in Central America?
**Interview with Political Analyst Dr. María Córdova on Nayib Bukele’s Reelection in El Salvador**
**Interviewer:** Welcome, Dr. Córdova. Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent elections in El Salvador, where President Nayib Bukele has declared himself the winner with over 85% of the votes. What are your thoughts on this substantial victory?
**Dr. Córdova:** Thank you for having me. Bukele’s victory is indeed striking, particularly given the context of his reelection. His ability to claim such a significant percentage of the vote reflects a strong support base, but it also raises questions about the democratic processes in place.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned the democratic processes. Bukele has faced criticism for running despite constitutional barriers against re-election. How does this affect the integrity of the election?
**Dr. Córdova:** Bukele’s maneuver to run again certainly puts a spotlight on the rule of law in El Salvador. Some may argue that it shows political ingenuity, while others see it as undermining constitutional principles. The legitimacy of an election heavily depends not just on the votes cast but on the legality of the candidacy itself.
**Interviewer:** In his victory speech, Bukele celebrated the overwhelming support from the public. How do you think his administration might leverage this mandate moving forward?
**Dr. Córdova:** With such a decisive win, Bukele is likely to push forward with his agenda confidently, perhaps continuing to implement policies without much opposition. However, this could potentially deepen divisions within the political landscape, as the parties behind him trail significantly in the votes.
**Interviewer:** Given the results, with 1,295,888 votes tallied so far, do you see any potential challenges in the final scrutiny of the votes?
**Dr. Córdova:** While the preliminary results show a landslide victory for Bukele, the final scrutiny will be critical. If irregularities are found or if opposition parties raise concerns, it could lead to legal challenges. How the Supreme Electoral Tribunal handles this will be crucial for maintaining public trust.
**Interviewer:** And for our readers, what do you think the implications of this election are for democracy in El Salvador?
**Dr. Córdova:** This election raises important debates about democracy in Central America. While some see it as a restoration of stability under Bukele, others fear it signifies an erosion of democratic norms. How citizens respond to these developments can shape the future of governance in the region. Readers should consider: What does a president’s circumvention of constitutional limits mean for the health of democracy in El Salvador?
