TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Pramono Anung, the gubernatorial candidate representing number 3 in the Jakarta elections, has committed to advancing the initiative started by former governor Anies Baswedan concerning the sale of shares of PT Delta Djakarta, a prominent company renowned for its production of a variety of alcoholic beverages.
During a discussion on November 20, 2024, Pramono shared that he had conferred with Anies regarding the matter. He highlighted the crucial role of the Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD), stating that the ultimate decision to proceed with the share sale is under their jurisdiction.
“If elected, I will push the DPRD to streamline the process of enacting the necessary regulations to facilitate the sale of PT Delta’s shares,” Pramono declared at a campaign rally held in Petukangan Utara, Jakarta, on the same day. He reiterated his determination, confidently asserting, “Yes, we will sell it. Why not?”
Despite the intention to sell PT Delta’s shares, former governor Anies Baswedan alongside his deputy, Sandiaga Uno, were unable to accomplish this during their governing period. The DPRD’s position was contentious, showing a stark divide among its members, with some opposing the sale vehemently while others firmly supported it.
Gembong Warsono, who chairs the PDIP faction in the DPRD, articulated strong opposition against the proposed sale of PT Delta’s shares. He stated that the company, known for popular brands such as Anker, Carlsberg, Kuda Putih, and San Miguel, enjoys profitability and significantly contributes to Jakarta’s finances through annual dividends. “Why should we sell shares in a healthy company that clearly generates revenue for Jakarta?” he passionately questioned.
Gembong also raised alarms about the city’s financial stability, arguing against the necessity of divesting the shares. He firmly advocated for the government to maintain its 26.25 percent stake in PT Delta, emphasizing that the company distributes substantial profits, amounting to tens of billions of rupiah, every year, which can be critical for the city’s budget.
The concerns were echoed by members of the PKB faction, where advisor Darussalam cautioned against any rash decisions regarding the divestiture of shares without thorough evaluation and consultation with the DPRD. He elaborated that retaining shares would provide the government with essential oversight over the production and distribution of alcoholic beverages, a critical aspect of public health and safety. In contrast, he warned that selling the shares would result in the loss of governmental control over this significant industry.
