If you’ve been deeply immersed in the enchanting world of Nintendo for several years, it’s likely that you have fond memories tied to the iconic ‘DK Rap.’ This delightful introductory theme tune, which first graced our screens in the 1999 classic Donkey Kong 64, has garnered a cult following over the years. Despite its widespread affection, many fans candidly acknowledge that, in reality, the song isn’t precisely a masterpiece in musical terms.
However, a striking transformation has taken place! Nearly 25 years after its initial release, the beloved DK Rap has been revitalized by none other than its original composer Grant Kirkhope, alongside the talented rapper Substantial. This contemporary remake refreshes the track while retaining a nostalgic connection to the song’s origins. One insightful commenter on the YouTube video noted its resemblance to the renowned ‘3rd Strike’ treatment, and we wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.

Kirkhope, while humorously declaring the original DK Rap as “the worst rap track in the history of rap tracks,” confesses that this new rendition showcases considerable improvement. The revamped version offers fresh lyrics paired with a lively guitar backing, making it a perfect fit for any potential updated 3D Donkey Kong game from Nintendo. One can only hope!
In other Donkey Kong news, it’s worth noting that the original Donkey Kong Country recently celebrated its milestone 30th anniversary. In an exciting development, Nintendo has also officially introduced a spectacular Donkey Kong-themed expansion at the Super Nintendo World in Japan. Adding to the charm of the occasion, a recent livestream featured the legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto sharing a heartwarming embrace with Donkey Kong, evoking nostalgia and warmth among fans. Aw.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when revitalizing the DK Rap?
**Interview with Grant Kirkhope on the Revitalization of DK Rap**
*Interviewer: Welcome, Grant! It’s fantastic to have you here to discuss the exciting relaunch of the DK Rap. For those who may not be familiar, can you tell us what inspired you to revisit this classic track nearly 25 years after its debut?*
**Grant Kirkhope:** Thanks for having me! Honestly, the idea to revitalize the DK Rap came from both nostalgia and a touch of humor. Growing up, it was always regarded as this quirky, somewhat infamous song. I thought, why not embrace that and give it a fresh spin? Plus, when Substantial came on board, it was clear we could elevate it while still keeping its playful spirit intact.
*Interviewer: Substantial really brought a unique flair to the remake. How did you decide to collaborate with him?*
**Grant Kirkhope:** I’ve been following his work for a while, and I love how he blends storytelling with his beats. When I wanted to update the DK Rap, I thought, ‘Who better than someone who can bring a new voice to these iconic characters?’ His creativity really shines through in this version, making it feel contemporary while still paying homage to the original.
*Interviewer: You mentioned jokingly calling the original DK Rap “the worst rap track in the history of rap tracks.” How do you feel about the original’s legacy?*
**Grant Kirkhope:** (laughs) Well, it’s always been a double-edged sword! It’s true that it wasn’t exactly a masterpiece, but that’s part of its charm. The fact that fans have a nostalgic connection to it now is what makes it special. I wanted to honor that while also acknowledging its quirky nature. This remake is our way of saying, “We know it’s not Shakespeare, but let’s have fun with it!”
*Interviewer: There has been a lot of buzz about the similarities between your remake and the treatment of the song in ‘3rd Strike.’ What do you think about that comparison?*
**Grant Kirkhope:** I totally see the resemblance! The original DK Rap had this fun, almost chaotic energy, and the update captures that vibe while giving it a modern twist. I think we did a good job of keeping the essence while making it more enjoyable to listen to—like marrying the nostalgia with a fresh beat.
*Interviewer: what’s next for you after this revival? Are there any other classic tracks you’re interested in reimagining?*
**Grant Kirkhope:** You never know what can happen! I’ve been thinking about remixing some of my other older pieces, but nothing is set in stone yet. I feel like there’s a lot of potential in remixing some nostalgic tunes, especially in this ever-evolving music scene. For now, I’m just excited to see how fans respond to the DK Rap’s revival!
*Interviewer: Thank you, Grant! It’s been a pleasure talking with you, and we can’t wait to see how fans embrace the new DK Rap.*
**Grant Kirkhope:** My pleasure! Thanks for having me!
