President of the Organizing Committee for the Paris 2024 Games, Tony Estanguet recently joined the ranks of the Coordination Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Something to bring to the organizers of the next Olympiad, experience acquired in recent years.
Bbenefiting from full success of the 2024 Summer GamesTony Estanguet should undoubtedly remain a leading personality in the Olympic sphere.
Perhaps in the months and years to come he will follow the path taken by a certain Sebastian Coe who, after the London 2012 Games, first gained power within the International Athletics Federation, ex -IAAF, which has since become World Athletics, before joining the IOC as a member, to today be one of the seven candidates for the presidency of the powerful institution.
Yes, yes leader Frenchman took a little rest at the end of this summer’s French Olympiad, he finally took charge of the Los Angeles 2028 Games Coordination Commission, a Commission of which he recently became one of the members and who was passing through the “City of Angels” at the start of the week.
With this new function, the three-time Olympic champion in canoe-slalom (C1) intends to give the Californian organizers the benefit of the experience he has acquired over the past years, since the official designation of Paris as Host of the Games and until the delivery of the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad.
For seven years, due to his role as President of the Organizing Committee for the 2024 Games, Tony Estanguet has been a privileged interlocutor both for the IOC and for various stakeholders in France, whether the Mayor of Paris, the President of the Île-de-France Region, of the Presidents of the Departmental Councils mobilized, but also of the Cities associated in holding the events, without forgetting of course the Head of State and the members of the government who have, each within the perimeter granted by their portfolio, contributed to the establishment of the global event.
In this particularly restrictive role given the scale of the Olympic and Paralympic event, the one who could have become Minister of Sports crowned with the success of the 2024 Olympics has above all had to face storms and tensions, notably during the health crisis of Covid-19 or when it was necessary to bring together political leaders with stated ambitions around the same table.
Today, Tony Estanguet – member of the IOC within the Athletes Commission between 2012 and 2021 – takes over the wish expressed in recent years by the Olympic institution for understanding and constant dialogue between past and future organizers of the Games.
Like a common thread, he will advise his counterpart in Los Angeles – who carried the Olympic flame on July 24 – Casey Wasserman, whom he knows well, the two men having been in charge of the candidacies when they were in head-on competition for 2024, before committing to a historic dialogue with the IOC to agree on a double attribution 2024-2028.
