**Interview with Human Rights Advocate, Maria Gonzalez**
**Editor:** Good afternoon, Maria. Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent tragic events involving Colombian migrants at the border and the comments made by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
**Maria Gonzalez:** Thank you for having me. It’s a critical issue that needs attention.
**Editor:** To begin with, can you tell us your thoughts on the president’s statement that the deaths are “being investigated”?
**Maria Gonzalez:** It’s a step in the right direction, but it’s also concerning. Investigations take time, and often the accountability we seek does not follow. We need to see transparency in this process to ensure that justice is served for the victims.
**Editor:** The confrontation occurred on November 2, resulting in the deaths of two Colombians. What are the implications of such incidents on migrant communities?
**Maria Gonzalez:** Incidents like this create an atmosphere of fear among migrants. It sends a message that their lives are not valued, which can deter vulnerable individuals from seeking safety. The safety report promised by the government needs to address the systemic issues that lead to these types of confrontations.
**Editor:** Human rights collectives have condemned the attack and demanded clarity. What specific actions do you think should be taken by the authorities?
**Maria Gonzalez:** Authorities must conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. Additionally, they should provide reparations to the victims’ families and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. It’s also vital to implement training for security forces on how to handle such situations without resorting to violence.
**Editor:** Do you believe that this incident will prompt a change in policies regarding the treatment of migrants in Mexico?
**Maria Gonzalez:** I hope so, but change requires sustained pressure from civil society. We must continue to advocate for the rights of migrants, pushing for reforms that prioritize their safety and dignity.
**Editor:** Thank you, Maria, for your insights on this sensitive issue. It’s important to continue this conversation and advocate for justice.
**Maria Gonzalez:** Thank you for shedding light on it. More attention needs to be given to the plight of migrants, and every laugh lost must be a call for action.
