The Spanish Congress rejects a proposal against Claudia Sheinbaum

MADRID, Spain.— The Congress of Deputies of Spain rejected the proposal promoted by the Vox parties y Popular (PP) in which it was called to condemn the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardofor not inviting your inauguration al king Philip VIhead of the Spanish State.

With 19 votes against Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) and the Catalan, Basque and Galician nationalists rejected the proposal, which obtained 17 votes in favor.

Vox stance

On October 3, the Vox party presented its proposal, to which it added an amendment formulated by the PP.

The intention was for the Congress of Deputies to make the following message public and official:

“As a representative of the Spanish people, and with the utmost respect for the brother people of Mexico (sic), I condemn the attitude expressed by the president (sic) of the United Mexican States, Claudia Sheinbaum, against the figure of the head of State, His Majesty. Felipe VI and, therefore, the Spanish people.”

It was also proposed to urge “the government to disapprove the presence of Spanish political representatives at the inauguration” of Claudia Sheinbaum because, according to these political organizations, it represented “an attack on the figure” of the king.

It also proposed that the government “take appropriate measures to defend the historical legacy of Spain in Mexico (sic).”

Position of the Spanish Government

At the end of September, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, established his position regarding the exclusion of the king from the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum and assured that no representative of his administration would attend the event.

What⁣ are ⁢the implications of Dr. Elena Torres’ insights on the Spanish Congress’ decision regarding President Sheinbaum’s actions for future diplomatic relations between‌ Spain and ‌Mexico? ‌

**Interview with⁣ Dr. Elena Torres, Political Analyst and Expert on Spain-Mexico Relations**

**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. ‌Torres. The recent rejection by the Congress of Deputies to condemn Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum⁤ over her inauguration invitation snub of⁢ King Felipe VI⁤ has sparked considerable debate. What‌ do you make of this decision?

**Dr.‌ Torres:** Thank you for having‍ me. The rejection of the Vox ⁢and PP proposal signals a significant stance within the Spanish Congress,⁤ reflecting a⁢ more nuanced approach to international relations with Mexico. The PSOE and various regional parties,⁤ such as those from‍ Catalonia and the Basque ⁢Country, seem to prioritize maintaining diplomatic ties over political theatrics.

**Interviewer:** Vox Party leader Santiago Abascal has criticized Sheinbaum’s actions as⁣ dismissive of Spain’s historical ties to Mexico. Do you think this reflects a broader⁣ sentiment in Spain regarding ⁣its colonial past?

**Dr. Torres:** Absolutely. Vox’s⁢ comments highlight a faction within Spanish politics that ‍is sensitive to perceived slights⁢ against Spain’s historical‌ legacy. ‌However, it’s essential to recognize that such sentiments ⁢are not universally⁢ held.‌ Many others in Spain are increasingly aware of the complexities of colonial history and emphasize respectful dialogue instead of reactionary condemnations.

**Interviewer:** How do you think Sheinbaum’s decision not to invite the King impacts Mexico-Spain relations‌ moving⁤ forward?

**Dr. Torres:** While this specific incident may create some tensions, I don’t foresee it derailing Mexico-Spain relations entirely. Both nations⁣ have shared⁤ interests in areas like trade, immigration, and cultural exchange. It’s crucial for‍ leaders on both sides ⁢to focus on constructive dialogue rather‍ than public condemnation, which could only escalate tensions.

**Interviewer:** What steps do you‌ think need to be taken‍ by both governments to ensure a positive‌ relationship going forward?

**Dr. Torres:** Open ⁢communication is vital. Both countries should prioritize diplomatic channels to address grievances—be it through cultural initiatives, economic partnerships, or collaborative projects. Additionally, addressing historical ‍issues thoughtfully and respectfully ‍can pave the way for a more robust relationship moving forward.
