About the episode
Metal Slug Tactics is a new, more strategic edition in the series of games where you normally run around and blast constantly. Joe van Burik discusses this game with BNR colleague John-Boy Vossen, himself a Metal Slug fan, in this Extra Mini-Game episode of All in the Game.
Over All in the Game
All in the Game is the podcast about games for everyone. Whenever there is something going on in the world of games, you will hear about it here: exciting developments, fascinating research and of course the latest releases to play on your PlayStation, Xbox, PC or any other platform.
Led by BNR’s tech editor Joe van Burik, you will hear conversations with other game experts, such as computer science professor Felienne Hermans, audio producers André Dortmont and Wesley Schouwenaars, stock market nerd Jochem Visser, tech editors Niels Kooloos and Daniël Mol and pop culture experts Donner Bakker and Sam van Zuilen.
Every week you hear at least one episode of All in the Game. Or several, when there is a lot going on in the world of games. Sometimes with impressions and analyzes about current developments and new games. Other times you can listen to interviews with makers of special games, from Grand Theft Auto (GTA) to Baldur’s Gate 3 – both Dutch and international developers. Or we talk to esports athletes, researchers and other experts in the world of video games, in our Main Game section. And we regularly have someone from BNR Nieuwsradio join us to talk about their favorite game from the past in the Retro section.
In this podcast we look beyond just what makes a game fun: we also discuss its cultural, social, economic and technological impact. After all, the global gaming industry is worth around 200 billion euros every year, which is (for many years now) actually more than the music and film industries combined.
This way, at All in the Game you not only hear what you should play – and on which new (game) platform – but you can be even more conscious about it, talk about it and of course enjoy it. Whether it concerns Super Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog, Fortnite or Roblox, football games from EA Sports FC or FIFA, Call of Duty or Battlefield, League of Legends or Dota, or golden old titles such as Tetris, Rollercoaster Tycoon, The Sims or even Snake. And we also pay attention to hobbies that are close to games, such as Dungeons & Dragons, Lego and the films, series and comics around series such as Star Wars and Marvel. It’s all covered in All in the Game.
All in the Game was recorded as a podcast in 2022 in the archive of the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision in Hilversum – as the first podcast of BNR Nieuwsradio and one of the first game podcasts of all. Together with countless Dutch television programs, radio shows, games, websites, web videos and podcasts, this material forms Dutch media history.

All in the Game: Where Pixels Meet Podcasts
Now, let’s talk about All in the Game. This isn’t just your run-of-the-mill podcast; it’s like the Avengers of the gaming world! Hosted by Joe van Burik—who, I must add, sounds more reliable than a Wi-Fi connection at a nerd convention—this show dives headfirst into the deep waters of gaming. Whether you’re into the latest PlayStation titles, Xbox gems, or those obscure PC games that only five people play but all five rave about—this podcast’s got you covered like a well-placed in-game save point!
Joe’s chats with a crew of gaming experts are as eclectic as the characters in a Mario Kart race. You’ve got professors, audio producers, stock market enthusiasts (because nothing says ‘gamer’ like having strong opinions on mutual funds), and pop culture geeks. It’s like a buffet where every dish is labelled “Don’t Knock It Till You Try It”.
A Glimpse Beyond the Screen
But wait! There’s more than just gameplay analysis in this podcast—no, my friends, we don’t stop at just telling you what’s fun. We go deeper! Each episode explores the cultural, social, economic and technological impacts of gaming. Picture it: the global gaming industry is making €200 billion a year. That’s right! More than movies and music combined. So, what do we do with all that cash? We discuss whether or not Sonic could beat Mario in a straight-up race, obviously.
From classic titles like Tetris to modern masterpieces like Baldur’s Gate 3, the conversation is as vast as the audiences they’re drawing in. Ever thought of how Dungeons & Dragons ties back to video games? This podcast will change the way you think about your tabletop snacks!
