We need a “pragmatic approach” and not an “ideological” one if we want to protect the environment. Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke this morning in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the occasion of Cop29, the 29th UN Conference on climate change. “Italy intends to continue to do its part. We already allocate a large part of the over four billion euros of the Climate Fund to the African continent and we will continue to support initiatives such as the Green Climate Fund and the Loss and Damage Fund, as well as promote the involvement of multilateral development banks. It is equally a priority that the decarbonization process takes into consideration the sustainability of our production and social systems theme risks leading us astray towards success. The right path is that of technological neutrality, because currently there is no single alternative to supplying from fossil fuels”, stated the Prime Minister.
“We need a balanced energy mix to improve the transition process. We must use all available technologies. Not only renewables, but also gas, biofuels, hydrogen, CO2 capture and, in the future, nuclear fusion which could produce clean, safe and unlimited energy. Italy is at the forefront of fusion nuclear energy”, explained Meloni. “This summit, for which I thank the Azerbaijani presidency, is called to give further impetus to the commitment to limit the increase in global temperature to within 1.5 degrees,” he said. At COP28 in Dubai “we set ourselves ambitious objectives: to triple the capacity to generate renewable energy in the world and double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030. To achieve these objectives, everyone’s collaboration is needed – starting from the main greenhouse gas emitters – as well as adequate financial support”.

What specific practical solutions is Italy implementing to balance environmental protection with economic sustainability?
**Interview with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Climate Action at COP29**
**Editor:** Prime Minister Meloni, thank you for joining us today. You emphasized the need for a “pragmatic approach” rather than an “ideological” one in your address at COP29. Can you elaborate on what this means for Italy’s climate strategy?
**Prime Minister Meloni:** Thank you for having me. Yes, the need for pragmatism is crucial. It’s essential that our climate policies are grounded in reality rather than purely ideological positions. We must focus on practical solutions that allow us to protect the environment while also ensuring the sustainability of our production and social systems. It’s a balancing act, and our approach must reflect that.
**Editor:** You mentioned supporting initiatives like the Green Climate Fund and the Loss and Damage Fund. Can you tell us more about Italy’s contributions and commitments in these areas?
**Prime Minister Meloni:** Absolutely. Italy has already allocated a significant portion of our over four billion euro Climate Fund specifically to the African continent. This investment aims to support sustainable development in regions that are most affected by climate change. We’re committed to enhancing our involvement with multilateral development banks to mobilize further resources for climate action, recognizing the interconnectedness of our global environment.
**Editor:** You also referred to the concept of “technological neutrality.” How does this play a role in Italy’s path forward in decarbonization?
**Prime Minister Meloni:** Technological neutrality allows us to explore various avenues for energy production without favoring one option over another. Right now, there is no single alternative to fossil fuel dependency, but by supporting a diverse energy mix and innovation, we can transition to more sustainable energy sources effectively. It’s about finding what works best in balancing environmental needs with economic realities.
**Editor:** what message do you hope to send to the international community regarding Italy’s climate commitments?
**Prime Minister Meloni:** I want to convey that Italy is serious about its role in the global fight against climate change. We believe in collaboration and action over rhetoric. By putting forth pragmatic solutions and supporting vulnerable regions, we can create a more sustainable future for all. The time for decisive action is now. Thank you.
