Ariostea Library Event: Meet Author Fernando Venturini on Giacomo Matteotti, Nov 19, 2024

The Giaki and the Chini: A Love Story Complicated by Politics

Hello, my dear readers! Buckle up because we’re diving into a rather intriguing upcoming event that might make you question whether to bring a pen or a box of tissues. On Tuesday, 19 November 2024 at 5pm, the Ariostea Municipal Library will host a meeting with the author Fernando Venturini, as he unpacks his latest book, The Giaki and the Chini. If that title doesn’t pique your interest, it’s time to grab a coffee and get back to Netflix – this one’s about love, politics, and an absolute tragedy that will steam up some spectacles!

A Meeting of Minds and Hearts

Join us in the Agnelli Room for an exclusive chat with Mr. Venturini himself, alongside Alberto Andreoli and Dalia Bighinati, who will help draw back the curtains on the rather dramatic correspondence between Giacomo Matteotti and Velia Titta. What’s fascinating here is that their love letters, from the depths of passion to the peaks of political upheaval, have been carefully curated to tell a story that goes beyond mere sentimentality. Don’t worry; there will be video access for those who prefer to enjoy the seriousness of history with some popcorn via the Archibiblio YouTube channel.

The Manuscript That Conquered History

Now, why should you even care about Giacomo and Velia? Well, Giacomo Matteotti wasn’t just your regular Joe; he was a significant figure in Italian politics, known for his tireless efforts against Fascism – an endeavor that ultimately got him into deep water with the regime. What’s fascinating is that while Giacomo was battling in the political arena, Velia was holding down the fort emotionally. Their story is less of a rom-com and more of a heartfelt tragicomedy. Think Shakespeare meets a political thriller, all served with a side of spaghetti!

Exhibit A: The Love Letters

The book relies heavily on the letters they exchanged from 1912 to 1924, and folks, these are not your average ‘miss you’ notes. Fernando Venturini vividly illustrates their relationship as one that was filled with passion and peril, painting a picture of Giacomo as a man emotionally layered and politically inclined, while Velia managed to stay delightfully out of the furor while still being an essential part of his life. They were the ultimate power couple – one quietly watching politics unfold while the other was constantly dodging metaphorical political bullets.

Get the Lowdown

So, whether you’re a history buff, an avid romantic, or just looking for an intriguing evening out (which beats yet another round of binge-watching reality TV), we invite you to engage with this remarkable saga. The committee of the Dante Alighieri Society – Ferrara APS is partnering with the library for what they are calling a “Matteottian Trilogy.” Don’t ask how it will be a trilogy consisting of a book discussion, an exhibition, and a museum visit without the use of time travel – that’s just Ferrara for you!

Closing Remarks

In an era when political divisiveness is alarmingly relatable, the personal letters of Giacomo and Velia remind us that behind every monumental political figure lies a human story filled with hope, love, and despair. It’s almost Shakespearean, isn’t it? Mark your calendars, folks; you really don’t want to miss this in-depth analysis of love and loss. Oh, and don’t forget your tissues – you might need them!

THE SHEET (by the organizers)
The Ferrara Committee of the Dante Alighieri Society is committed to enhancing public awareness of the moral, civil, and political integrity exhibited by Giacomo Matteotti. Their initiatives during the centenary of his death aim to memorialize the struggles faced by Matteotti’s family and society at large. Among these initiatives is a “Matteottian trilogy,” which includes an exhibition titled “Giacomo Matteotti and liberating freedom” housed at the Ariostea Library, this public presentation of “The Giaki and the Chini,” and visits to the Giacomo Matteotti House-Museum and the Matteotti family Tomb located in Fratta Polesine.

Fernando Venturini is well-versed in the history of the Risorgimento and holds a degree in Library Science. His extensive career, which spanned from 1983 to 2020, included serving as a parliamentary advisor at the Library of the Chamber of Deputies, where he also acted as deputy director. Currently, he continues his collaboration as a consultant for the Institute. His dedication to exploring Giacomo Matteotti’s life has taken many forms throughout the years.

«The great love story between Giacomo Matteotti and Velia Titta is revealed through the hundreds of letters that the two lovers, then husband and wife, exchanged from 1912 to 1924. The centenary of his death is an opportunity to rebuild a relationship affective which was of extraordinary importance for Matteotti, despite the fact that Velia did not have his political passions and always lived far from the environments of militant socialism. The result is a “chronicle” which, through letters and other sources, illuminates not only the tormented life of a bourgeois family but also aspects of the soul of Giacomo Matteotti, to whom – as Gobetti wrote – the reasons for his thought and his political action. The glimpses that, in the intimate dialogue with Velia, Giacomo opens up on parliamentary life, the judgments on men and events, the silences themselves, give us a more nuanced and tormented personality. It was like this even when fascism arrived. Giaki became a target and the life of this happy couple descended into a relentless struggle that the book follows from a particular angle. Velia would have emerged a widow, with three children, besieged by the regime, destined to wither away after the death of her beloved, who had now become her “idol”.
