The Wellington Phoenix proudly received notable recognition at this year’s prestigious 2degrees Wellington Regional Business Excellence Awards, showcasing their vital contributions in the sports and hospitality sectors.
The Phoenix triumphed in the coveted category for excellence in hospitality, tourism, and retail, an honor sponsored by PKF Kendons, highlighting the club’s commitment to enriching the local economy and community.
The winners were unveiled during a spectacular awards gala event held at the Lower Hutt Event Centre last Friday night, an occasion filled with anticipation and celebration for local businesses.
Phoenix general manager David Dome graciously accepted the award on the club’s behalf through a heartfelt video message, expressing his apologies for their absence at the ceremony.
“This is a significant honor for us,” Dome emphasized. “We take our role as citizens of Wellington and our contribution to the local economy very seriously, so this recognition is truly magnificent.”
He extended his gratitude to everyone at 2degrees and PKF Kendons, while also congratulating all of the nominees and other award winners, fostering a spirit of community and collaboration amongst local businesses.
This commendation comes just three months after the Phoenix celebrated success at The Post Gold Awards, where they clinched the Vibrant Gold category, distinguishing themselves among businesses excelling in events, hospitality, and tourism throughout the Wellington region.

**Editor:** Congratulations on the recent award at the 2degrees Wellington Regional Business Excellence Awards! Can you share more about what this recognition means for the Wellington Phoenix and the community?
**David Dome:** Thank you! This is a significant honor for us. We take our role as a pillar of the Wellington community seriously, and being acknowledged for our contributions to hospitality, tourism, and the local economy is truly magnificent. It reinforces our commitment to enriching our community and engaging with our fans.
**Editor:** You mentioned the importance of your role in the community. How do you see the Phoenix influencing the local economy, especially in a time when many businesses are struggling?
**David Dome:** Our aim has always been to create a positive impact. By attracting fans to our matches and engaging in community events, we not only bolster local tourism but also support various businesses in hospitality and retail. During these challenging times, it is vital that we stand together to revitalize our local economy.
**Editor:** This award comes just months after your success at The Post Gold Awards. How do you plan to build on this momentum moving forward?
**David Dome:** Winning these awards inspires us to continue innovating and improving. We’ll use this recognition as fuel to engage even more with our community through events and collaborations with local businesses, ensuring that we all thrive together.
**Editor:** Some may argue that awards like this can sometimes overshadow the ongoing challenges faced by local businesses. What’s your take on this sentiment?
**David Dome:** I understand that perspective. While it’s essential to celebrate successes, we mustn’t lose sight of the hard work and challenges ahead. Awards can highlight positive efforts and foster motivation, but it’s crucial to continue the conversation about how we can collectively address hurdles in the community.
**Editor:** Lastly, what would you like to say to the readers regarding local support for businesses like Wellington Phoenix?
**David Dome:** I encourage everyone to engage with local businesses whenever possible. Supporting each other is vital to building a strong, vibrant community. The more we work together, the more resilient we become, and I hope this award inspires readers to think about how they contribute to our local economy.
**Editor:** Thank you for your insights, David. Readers, what do you think about the role of local sports clubs in supporting economic recovery? Do you believe the recognition of such contributions is enough, or should there be more initiatives focused on sustaining local businesses? Let’s hear your thoughts!
