Commuters in the greater Seoul area faced significant travel disruptions on Monday morning, as railway workers organized a labor slowdown or work-to-rule protest that led to operational delays.
The Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) issued a statement indicating that the labor union’s protest is severely affecting punctual subway operations throughout the metropolitan area, particularly impacting the Suinbundang Line, which serves as a vital connection between southern Seoul and Incheon.
Affected train services included a total of 39 routes — notably Seoul subway lines No. 1, 3, and 4, along with the Suinbundang Line, Gyeongui Jungang Line, and Seohae Line — which were reporting delays varying from five to 20 minutes by 8 a.m., as detailed in a report from Yonhap News Agency.
In addition, Korail noted that 59 subway services were delayed by over five minutes, and 46 train services had delays surpassing 10 minutes. Alarmingly, eight specific train services were delayed for more than 20 minutes, prompting concern among commuters.
On the metro platform, announcements were made every 10 minutes, advising passengers to seek alternative modes of transportation due to the irregular scheduling and delays affecting certain subway operations.
Korail reassured travelers that high-speed trains such as the KTX were operating on schedule, effectively providing a reliable option for commuters seeking swift transit.
To alleviate passenger inconvenience stemming from the labor action, Korail communicated potential alterations to subway car final destinations and service stoppages.
The current metro and train operational status is readily accessible through the mobile application “Korail Subway Talk” or via Korail’s official website.
